Despite the exploitation of salt deposit in the "Wieliczka" salt mine is not carried at the present time discharging of saline water is still a significant problem. Whole quantity of this water originates from Miocene formations surrounding this deposit. The saline water get to the salt mine through the system of faults, cavities and cracks. The total volume of saline water which should be managed is estimated about 210 thousands m3 of 110 g/l average salinity. The mean inflow of this water is about 24 m3/h but catastrophic one is also possible (e.g. in 1992 from the thirling "Mina"). As a result of changes of inflow velocity and quantity content of solid and dissolved parts is very diversified. The slightly saline water, up to 10 g/l, is grasped separately and carried away to the "Grabówka" stream through the system of tanks. The most saline water, above 220 g/l, is carried directly into the brine tanks. The medium saline water is pumped into the saltworks. The salt and full saturated brine production is the way of utilisation of saline water. The brine mixed with sand is used to backfilling. Formed during salt and brine production slimes and warps are also used to backfilling. Nowadays, the salt production in the "Wieliczka" salt mine is only a result of from surface waters protection before a discharge of saline water. Formed waste products are not hazardous for environment because of their using as the fillings.
