Szczególne zaangażowanie autorki w obronę walorów i wartości przestrzeni Krakowa nie jest przypadkowe. Wywodzi się ono z podziwu panoram i architektury rodzinnego miasta – Nowego Sącza, oglądanego od dzieciństwa, na tle bogatej przyrody Kotliny Sądeckiej. Ta fascynacja zadecydowała o wyborze kierunku studiów, a w całym życiu zawodowym i naukowym oglądane „na co dzień”, unikatowe piękno przestrzeni Krakowa zbudowało zaangażowanie w rozwiązywanie problemów miasta oraz imperatyw ochrony jego wartości. Można tu zwłaszcza wymienić osobiste uczestnictwo zawodowe i społeczne zaangażowanie w studia nad otoczeniem Wisły w obszarze Krakowa, obronę przed degradacją i zniszczeniem zabytkowego Podgórza, południowego przedpola Sanktuarium Bożego Miłosierdzia w Łagiewnikach, otoczenia zalewu na Zakrzówku i wiele innych. Odwagę do tych działań dawało przekonanie, że warto podejmować wiele wyzwań i wysiłków wbrew lansowanym poglądom i interesom, dla obrony ponadczasowego piękna Krakowa.

The Author’s particular commitment to defending the assets and values of the space of Cracow is by no means accidental. It derives from her admiration for the panoramas and architecture of her home town – Nowy Sącz, observed since her childhood, against the background of the abundant nature of the Nowy Sącz Basin. This fascination was decisive for the choice of the field of study, and over the Author’s entire professional and scientific career the unique beauty of the space of Cracow seen on the everyday basis built her commitment to solving problems faced by the city and gave rise to the imperative of the protection of its values. Elements that can be particularly emphasised in this respect are the Author’s personal professional and social engagement in studies devoted to the surroundings of the Vistula river within the perimeter of Cracow, the protection of the historical district of Podgórze, of the southern forefield of the Divine Mercy Sanctuary in Łagiewniki, of the area of Zakrzówek Lake, and many other locations against degradation and destruction. The courage to undertake these actions stemmed from the belief that it is worth taking challenges and making efforts, against promoted views and interests, in order to protect the timeless beauty of Cracow.

Allotment gardens are a unique phenomenon characteristic for the urbanistic structure of Polish cities. They played an important part in the post-war and socialist Poland. Currently, in line with the rise of pro-ecological trends, allotments tend to return to their previous functions. Their location, often in the central city areas, does influence the development of city greatly. Carried out studies indicate that allotments shape the value urban space favouring ecology and building social spaces.

Ogródki działkowe są ewenementem charakterystycznym dla urbanistycznych struktur polskich miast. Odegrały bardzo istotną rolę w okresie powojennej i socjalistycznej Polski. Aktualnie, wraz z rodzącym się nurtem proekologicznym, ogrody działkowe powracają do dawnych funkcji. Ich lokalizacja, często w pobliżu obszarów centralnych, ma niebagatelny wpływ na miasto. Jak wynika z przeprowadzonych badań ogródki działkowe znacząco wpływają na kształtowanie wartościowej, współczesnej przestrzeni miejskiej, sprzyjając ekologii i budowaniu przestrzeni społecznych.

W artykule przedstawiono sposoby przeobrażeń przestrzeni miejskiej przez adaptacje funkcjonalne istniejących kubatur zorganizowanej tkanki urbanistycznej oraz lokalizacje kampusów akademickich. Przedstawione w artykule przykłady lokalizacji kampusów akademickich mogą stanowić znaczące materiały analityczne we współczesnym planowaniu przestrzennym małych i średnich miast.

The paper presents new ways of spatial transformation of a town through functional adaptation of existing urban structures for academic campuses. Small and medium towns are a basic elements of urban network in Poland. In last fifteen years, many of them were severely weakened by a collapse in local industry - place of work for most of the habitants. In particularly bad position are towns which have lost the economical support of a large factories, employing often a few thousands of workers. The remaining building tissue, mostly abandoned, create a serious socio-economical problem. Development of academic campuses in small and medium towns is, in Poland, a fairly new tendency, demanding new way of looking at the aims of urban planning. Analysis of the areas for possible of adaptation for education purposes, can be used during the planning process of spatial composition in small and medium towns. Another phenomenon influencing functional transformations of build tissue, is degradation of ex-military areas. Mentioned above two types of areas make a serious problem ibr towns administration. Regulation and upgrading projects for these territories are usually based on local planning decisions (decisions on building conditions or decisions on public building location), because outdated local master plans cannot be applied in administration procedures. Examples of new localizations of educational functions presented in this paper may become an analytical support for contemporary spatial planning of small and medium towns.
