Wietrznia Hill, located in the south-eastern part of Kielce, is the eastern end of the Kadzielnia Klippen Belt. This belt marks the course of the Middle and Upper Devonian outcrops in the southern wing of the Variscan Kielce Syncline. Wietrznia Hill is cut by a system of interconnected excavations, resembling a ravine or canyon 1 km long, 100-300 m wide and 20-50 m deep. From the west, it is formed by three inactive quarries: Wietrznia, Międzygórze and Międzygórze II. The profile, visible in the quarry walls, includes lithologically differentiated Frasnian limestones of the Wietrznia Beds and the Famennian Shales and Marly Limestones Formation. These deposits are strongly tectonized and are affected by karst processes. The history of their exploitation dates back to the 1880s and ended in 1974. The abandoned quarries became recreational areas of Kielce. In 1999, they were included in the Wietrznia Nature Reserve named after Zbigniew Rubinowski. Since 2003, they have been managed by Geopark Kielce and currently by Geonatura Kielce. Since 2012, the Geoeducation Centre has been operating at the south-eastern end of the Międzygórze II quarry.
