Satisfying the needs in respect to constantly growing demand for transport services, especially for road traffic, is based on development of the roads system with diverse technical parameters. Location of a road very often leads to formation of a conflict area, where functional restrictions of the hitherto existing ways of exploitation are involved. These restrictions mostly concern the areas of great natural value, including forest ecosystems. Location of roads within forest areas brings limitations in performing their economic, social, recreation functions and above all their role in environment and landscape preservation. The study proposes a set of criteria and indicators of the forest valorisation in terms of location of roads of high national and voivodeship ranking. The indicators of protective, economic and spatial nature have been discussed. The presented rules of valorisation should form grounds for elaborating a valorisation method whose results could serve as a helpful tool in implementation of newly planned road investments according to the least harmful variant for the forest areas.
