The treatment with enzymes in order to obtain new, modern appearance of silk clothing fabrics (i.e. worn look or washed look) is described. Changes in the surface structure of silk fibres caused by the action of proteolytic enzyme has been analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). It is concluded that the fibrillation of fibroin threads is the main factor affecting both esthetic properties of modified silk products and the manufacturing possibility of silk-containing paper recommended for conservation work on the destroyed silk antique fabrics.
