For an average person Internet means access to great amount of data. Computer networks are among many techniques which bring benefits people at all over the world. At present we can not imagine existence of any sphere of human activity. (industry, banking, […] The most important thing which education brings in open distance learning is the possibility to avoid model of traditional transfer of knowledge. Open distance learning allows for individual treatment of every participant - it means that every one choose when, how, in what rate and what is a matter of study. Application of open system learning brings an advantage of liquidating barriers and limitations in access to education, in which individual needs and expectations you can take into consideration. There is already possibility to study in virtual university which offers complete program of education and allows you to get a degree but even though I am sure that conventional and traditional methods of learning can not be fully replaced by open distance learning system.

Artykuł poświecony jest krytycznej analizie możliwości zrealizowania idei uniwersytetu wirtualnego w Polsce. Przedstawiono w nim przegląd podstawowych paradygmatów nauczania. Omówiono możliwości zastosowania technologii informacyjnej w kształceniu ustawicznym i kształceniu na odległość. Przedyskutowano także polskie doświadczenia w tych dziedzinach.

This paper is devoted to critical analysis of the possibility to fulfill the idea of virtual university in Poland. Basic teaching paradigms are presented in it. Possibilities of implementation of information technology in Continuing Education and Distance Learning are described. Also Polish experiences in this area are discussed.
