The present paper is concerned with the practical interconnection between virtual engineering tools and additive model manufacturing technologies and the subsequent production of a ceramic shell by rapid prototyping with the use of Cyclone technology to produce the aluminium casting prototype. Prototypes were developed as part of the student formula project, where several parts originally produced by machining were replaced by castings. The techniques of topological optimization and the combination with the tools of the numerical simulation were used to optimise the virtual prototype before a real production of the first prototype. 3D printing of wax pattern ensured direct and fast assembly of the cluster without any additional operations and troubles during dewaxing. The shell was manufactured in 6 hours thanks to a system of quick-drying of individual layers of ceramic shell. It has been verified that the right combination of individual virtual tools with the rapid prototyping can shorten the development time and delivery of the first prototypes from a few months to a few weeks.

The paper presents the results of research & development done at the University of Žilina, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in the area of Digital Engineering and simulation in the design of products and production systems. The digital technologies are used in innovation process of products and production systems. The paper describes the concept of Digital Factory being developed at the University of Žilina. Starting from the conceptual model of a product the whole chain of digital design processes of the given product and its production system are described. The digitization procedure is presented using 3D laser scanning technologies. The paper presents the theoreti cal research done in metamodelling based on computer simulation and used by the choice of the appropriate shop floor control system. The future research goals are presented as well.

Na prostym przykładzie przedstawiono schemat stosowany przez autorów do edukacyjnej prezentacji projektowania wirtualnego na Wydziale Maszyn Roboczych i Transportu. Przeprowadzono pogłębioną analizę opartą na historycznych już przykładach z dziedziny lotnictwa. W końcowej części wskazano, dlaczego do ilustracji inżynierii wirtualnej wybrano lotnictwo. Pokazano, jak Politechnika Poznańska uczestniczy w projekcie komputerowego przewidywania sprężystego zachowania się samolotu w locie - przez dostarczenie programów wykorzystywanych do projektowania samolotów w takich firmach, jak Airbus, SAAB-Grippen, CASA, Alenia czy EADS.

The paper presents the main ideas of Virtual Engineering in mechanical design on base of courses held in Poznań University of Technology. The analysis is illustrated with the well known virtual aircrafts projects. The experiences gained by the authors in the V-th European Union Framework Programme "TAURUS" (Technology Development for Aeroelastic Simulations on Unstructured Grids) are used to present the actual design methods in the European Aerospace Industry.
