The article describes the rules for planning a ship's navigation in the event of loss of propulsion. A disabled ship drifting freely at sea is a potential danger to the crew and the marine environment. Lack of propulsion means that the ship cannot give way to other ships/keep out of the way of another vessel. One of the main elements of danger for a drifting ship is the possibility of grounding in restricted areas. The aim of the article is to draw the attention of navigators to the dangers to navigation resulting from ships drifting without their own propulsion, disabled ships.

Artykuł jest próbą analizy rzeczywistego wpływu morskich prądów stałych i pływowych na przebieg zaplanowanej podróży statkiem. Celem jest sprawdzenie dokładności predykcji zachowania się statku na podstawie informacji dostępnej na mapach nawigacyjnych oraz w publikacji „Admiralty Tide Tables”. Planując przejście jednostki pływającej, starano się tak uwzględnić jej ewentualny znos, aby zapewnić odpowiedni margines głębokości oraz odległości do brzegów i płycizn. Na mapy nawigacyjne z wyznaczoną trasą podróży nanoszono pozycje zliczone i obserwowane statku. Następnie je porównano w celu wyznaczenia kąta znosu na podstawie analizy graficznej oraz jej porównania z wartościami spodziewanymi, wyznaczonymi na podstawie danych z publikacji „Admiralty Tide Tables” oraz map nawigacyjnych regionu.

The work is an attempt to analyze the real influence of ocean and tidal currents on the course of the planned voyage. The purpose was to check how accurately the behavior of the ship can be predicted by using the information available on the navigational charts and in Admiralty Tide Tables. The vessel's drift in the area was taken into account to ensure that the depth and distance to shore and shoals were adequate. Dead reckoning and observed positions were plotted on navigational charts, compared and the actual drift of the vessel was determined and compared with the expected values based on data from Admiralty Tide Tables and navigational charts of the region.
