W artykule przedstawiono nową Międzynarodową Klasyfikację Chmur zawartą w atlasie chmur udostępnionym 23 marca 2017 r. na stronie internetowej WMO https://www.wmocloudatlas.org/home.html i porównano ją z klasyfikacją dotychczas obowiązującą w polskiej służbie meteorologicznej. W nowym atlasie wprowadzono zmiany językowe, polegające m.in. na usunięciu archaizmów i zastosowaniu współczesnej terminologii. Poprawiono wygląd atlasu, wykorzystano fotografie doskonałej jakości, wprowadzono dodatkowe informacje i materiały źródłowe ułatwiające poznanie chmur i zrozumienie zjawisk zachodzących w atmosferze. Unowocześniono formę atlasu, dostosowując ją do interaktywnej wersji internetowej. Pod względem merytorycznym dokonano następujących zmian: – wprowadzono 1 nowy gatunek chmur (volutus), – gatunek floccus dodano do chmur Stratocumulus, – wprowadzono 5 nowych zjawisk szczególnych (asperitas, fluctus, cavum, murus, cauda), – wprowadzono 1 nową chmurę towarzyszącą (flumen), – wprowadzono 5 nowych chmur szczególnych (flammagenitus, silvagenitus, cataractagenitus, homogenitus, homomutatus). Nie zmieniły się zasady szyfrowania chmur wg liczb klucza SYNOP CL, CM, CH.

The article presents the new International Classification of Clouds contained in the Cloud Atlas released on March 23, 2017 on the WMO website https://www.wmocloudatlas.org/home.html. It was compared with the classification currently used in the Polish meteorological service. The new atlas introduced language changes that include removing the archaisms and replacing them with contemporary terminology. The design of the atlas was improved and the photographs used are of the excellent quality. Moreover, additional information and resources helping the reader to learn about clouds and understand atmospheric phenomena were introduced. The form of the atlas has been modernized, adapting it to the interactive online version. The following content-related changes have been made: – the new cloud species (volutus) was introduced, – floccusspecies was added to Stratocumulus clouds, – 5 new supplementary features were introduced (asperitas, fluctus, cavum, murus, cauda), – 1 new accessory cloud was introduced (flumen), – 5 new special clouds were introduced (flammagenitus, silvagenitus, cataractagenitus, homogenitus, homomutatus). Coding instructions of clouds in the SYNOP codes CL, CM, CH haven’t changed.
