Artykuł porusza tematykę dziedzictwa architektury Górnego Śląska II połowy XX wieku jako problemu badawczego i konserwatorskiego. Celem publikacji jest charakterystyka architektury Górnego Śląska tego okresu w szerszym kontekście rozwoju architektury w Polsce oraz wydobycie głównych problemów związanych z jej ochroną. Tekst składa się z dwóch części. W części pierwszej przedstawiono ogólną charakterystykę okresu II połowy XX wieku w rozwoju architektury w Polsce, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Górnego Śląska. Omówiono także wybrane zagadnienia ochrony architektury powojennej oraz problemy z nią związane, w tym: brak całościowej wiedzy na temat zasobów architektonicznych tego okresu, trudności związane z ich waloryzacją czy niska świadomość społeczna w zakresie ich wartości. Część druga zawiera omówienie przykładów działań podejmowanych przez autorkę w ramach współpracy pomiędzy Wydziałem Architektury Politechniki Śląskiej a Instytutem Dokumentacji Architektury Biblioteki Śląskiej. Wspólne działania mają na celu dokumentację i ochronę dziedzictwa (materialnego i niematerialnego) Górnego Śląska w zakresie architektury oraz urbanistyki. Wypracowana metodyka interdyscyplinarnych działań, realizowana z sukcesem od blisko dziesięciu lat, może stać się uniwersalnym modelem postępowania w tym zakresie.

The article deals with the subject of the architectural heritage of Upper Silesia of the second half of the 20th century in terms research and conservation problem. The aim of the publication is to characterize the architecture of Upper Silesia of that period within the broader context of Polish architecture development, and to highlight the main problems related to its protection. The text consists of two parts. The first part presents a general description of the period of the second half of the 20th century in the development of architecture in Poland, particularly emphasizing the Upper Silesian facilities. Selected issues of the protection of post-war architecture and related problems were also discussed, including: the lack of comprehensive knowledge about the architecture of this period, difficulties related to its valorization and low social awareness of its values. The second part contains a discussion of examples of activities undertaken by the author within the cooperation between the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology and the Institute of Architecture Documentation of the Silesian Library in Katowice. Joint activities are focused on documentation and protection of the heritage (tangible and intangible) of Upper Silesia in the field of architecture and town planning. The methodology of interdisciplinary activities, successfully implemented for nearly ten years, may become a universal model for this field development.

Value assessment of Zamość from the perspective of 25 years on UNESCO World Heritage List

The historical center of Zamość was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992 and over next 25 years the city has undergone great changes. Thanks to numerous restoration, preservation and maintenance works we are now able to admire the beauty of its monuments and perfect spatial harmony. But this is not the end of planned work. Zamość Old Town is a historical part of a vibrant city and therefore needs to evolve constantly in order to satisfy the contemporary requirements of urban population. Concurrently, over that period of time theory of conservation and preservation of monuments and evaluation methodology of the value of goods inscribed on World Heritage List have developed significantly. Hence, the 25th anniversary is a perfect occasion for a renewed evaluation of Zamość Old Town’s value and more in-depth analysis in accordance with current methodology and state of knowledge. It enables further specification and indication of authentic and material carriers of its value which determine its further existence. At the same time, it will allow indicating the limits of possible interference. In addition to this, the outcome of this thorough analysis will be of great use in taking decisions on further actions and investments, which is particularly important with monuments so heterogeneous as a historical city center.
