The problem of mountain water treatment is still raising great interest both in this country and abroad. Mountain water calls for treatment by enhanced coagulation not only because of high coloured matter content and turbidity, but also because of high organic substance concentrations which affect the efficiency of disinfection. This undesirable effect persists even if other pollutants do not exceed the admissible levels. In the present paper, consideration is given to seasonal variations of organic matter (including THM precursors) in the "Wisła-Czarne" reservoir, which stores mountain waters. On the basis of statistical analysis, attempts are made to correlate organic matter concentration (expressed as UV254], colour, COD and TOC. Making use of measured UV254 and TOC values, the susceptibility of the water to treatment by enhanced coagulation is assessed.

Natural waters in mountain areas are characterized by a high coloured matter content and turbidity, especially during heavy rains and snow melting. A conventional treatment train for mountain water, which consists of filtration and disinfection, is insufficient to provide drinking water of appropriate quality. To eliminate this drawback it is necessary to include coagulation as a unit process. The present paper describes a pilot-scale study into the influence of temperature on the efficiency of conventional treatment. The paper also shows an attempt to explain the difficulties encountered when carrying out volume coagulation at decreased temperatures. Winter temperatures have an adverse effect on the coagulation process. Although they do not inhibit the hydrolysis of the alum coagulant, and even though the alum hydroxide floes are able to remove organic substances from water - the flocs themselves have a short life and dissolve.
