Złożoność pojęcia "architektura" wynika nie tylko z faktu, że obejmuje ona różnorodne obszary twórczości czy przejawy kultury człowieka, w których sztuka i zasoby umiejętności wyrażają się w realnych formach, ale przede wszystkim z faktu, że architektura wypełnia różnorodne zadania. Ta złożoność pojęcia "architektura" przenosi się na samą architekturę, która jako sztuka nie polega jedynie na tworzeniu tego, co sam twórca uważa za piękne, dobre, użyteczne, lecz głównie na jego umiejętności przełożenia na język form tego, czego oczekuje od niego społeczność. Dlatego też, między innymi, na pojęcie "architektura" wpływ mają, oprócz postaw filozoficznych i różnorodnych tendencji w dziedzinach innych sztuk, programy społeczne i polityczne, którym służy architektura. Czy sam fakt, że coś powstało w realnym kształcie przestrzennym i służy określonemu celowi jest już działem architektury ? Czy nowa architektura operująca pojęciami wydarzeń i przepływów, odchodząc od ścisłych form funkcji czy konstrukcji, podążając podobną drogą jak współczesna muzyka, w której zapis, partytura pozostawia coraz więcej miejsca na swobodną interpretację, jest dziełem, utworem architektury porównywalnym w swej istocie do architektury historycznej?

Is it possible to define a work of architecture? The complexity of the notion of "architecture" is caused not only by the fact that it encompasses various areas of creative endeavour or manifestations of human culture, in which art and skill resources are expressed in real forms, but primarily by the fact that architecture performs various tasks. This complexity of the notion of "architecture" is transposed on architecture per se, which - as an art - consists not merely in creation of what the creator considers beautiful, good, useful, but primarily in his or her ability to translate what the community expects of him or her into the language of forms. This is why, among other factors, the notion of "architecture" is influenced - apart from philosophical attitudes and a variety of trends in other arts - by so-cial and political programs that architecture serves. Can the notion of a work of architecture be considered without fathoming the issue of who creates it? Does the term "architect" not already contain the definition of a work of archi-tecture as a combination, a grouping of bodies adapted to satisfy the needs of man? Between the intention and the completion, there is a long process of search for a solution, constituting a specific creative effort on the part of the architect, endowing the intuitive idea with specific form. A design is a record of this creative effort and solution-searching process. The initial concept idea - fixed in various forms, as a note, a drawing, a sketch of the form, a spatial shape - once the choice is made, is followed by the phase when the design of the work is made. This is the second stage or the second manifestation of the architect's creative work. Closing the design stage does not mean the end of the creative process. As a rule, it continues throughout the whole realisation of a work of architecture, until the end of the construction, i.e. until the idea serving man comes into being, in a real, material shape. The completed work is the last phase of the creative process in the art of shap-ing space. Is the very fact that something has taken on a real spatial shape and serves a specific purpose already a work of architecture? Is new architecture - using the notions of events and flows, going away from the strict forms of function or structure, following instead a path similar to that of contemporary music, where notation, the score leaves more and more room for unrestricted interpretation - a work of architecture comparable in its essence to historical architecture?
