A study into the oxidation of sulfites contained in a waste product obtained from semi-dry flue gas desulfurization process has been performed. Ozone enriched air or oxygen and weak hydrogen peroxide solution used as oxidizing agents were found favourable for this purpose. The waste treated in such a way can be utilized in agriculture as soil lime. In contrast to ozone, hydrogen peroxide proved to be more efficient, cost-effective and more favourable under the equipment aspect. From technological and economical point of view, it seems most advantageous to carry out the sulfite oxidation operation using atomized hydrogen peroxide solution introduced directly into the bulk waste during the desulfurization process.
