W artykule pokazano możliwość zastosowania metod metalograficznych do oceny stopnia uszkodzenia wewnętrznego stali chromowo-molibdenowych eksploatowanych w warunkach pełzania. Wykorzystanie obrazów struktur metalograficznych uzyskanych w wyniku badań w skaningowym mikroskopie elektronowym lub w mikroskopie konfokalnym pozwala zaklasyfikować materiał pod względem stopnia uszkodzenia wewnętrznego. Stanowi ono jedno z istotnych kryteriów dopuszczenia elementu do dalszej eksploatacji lub też podstawę do wymiany elementu instalacji ze względu na zbyt duże jego zniszczenie w wyniku równoczesnego działania podwyższonej temperatury i naprężenia.

The article presents the possibility of using metallographic methods to assess the degree of internal damage to chromium-molybdenum steels operated in creep conditions. Using images of metallographic structures obtained as a result of scanning electron microscopy or confocal microscopy enables classifying a material in terms of the internal damage degree. It is one of the important criteria for approving an element for further operation or is the basis for replacing the element of an installation due to its excessive destruction as a result of the simultaneous action of elevated temperature and stress.

Content available remote Assessment of internal damages in sandwich panels via active thermography

Recently, the application of polymer-based composites in civil constructions and substitution of traditional materials by composites became a normal practice. Increasing applicability of composites, primarily sandwiches with soft cores, induces the development of the non-destructive testing methods used for the quality control and in-service inspection of the constructions made of such materials. In this study the internal damages, typical for the foamcore thick sandwich panels, that occur during manufacturing process as well as during in-service life were investigated. The description of internal damages was prepared based on real practical cases. Several types of damages were simulated in the foam-core sandwich panels, which were then tested using active thermography. Obtained results point to the great potential of this method in application for the damage assessment of structures and constructions made of these materials. The damages like cracks, partial local lacks of the core and debonding were successfully detected and localized. The method can be applied during inspections of civil structures being currently in operation and as a quality control method during manufacturing of these structures.

Content available remote Methodology of classification of internal damage the steels during creep service

Purpose: of this publication is to present the methodology of computer assisted method for analysis of the metallographic images obtained in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) from the elements after long time creep service. Design/methodology/approach: Stages in development of internal damage involving intercrystalline cavitation cracking were discussed and illustrated with micrographs. The method based on analysis of images, shape coefficients and neural networks was proposed as a tool to evaluate the internal damage classes of materials used for the high-pressure installations elements working in creep conditions. Findings: Combining of several methods making use of the image analysis, shape coefficients, and neural networks will make it possible to achieve the better efficiency of class recognition of damages developed in the material. Practical implications: The presented method can be use in industrial practice for evaluation and qualification of creep-damage of power station boiler components operating in creep regime (e.g., steam boilers, chambers, pipelines, and others). Originality/value: Original value of the work is applying the artificial intelligence method for the classification of internal damage in the steel during creep service.

Przeprowadzone badania miały na celu poszukiwanie zależności pomiędzy zawartością białka i azotanów a strukturą mechanicznych uszkodzeń bulw ziemniaka. Badaniami objęto: dwie odmiany ziemniaka, które uprawiano na dwóch różnych glebach, przez trzy kolejne lata. Do nawożenia stosowano cztery rodzaje nawozów. Badane parametry jakościowe bulw ziemniaka w istotnym stopniu zależały od czynników doświadczenia. Zaproponowane w pracy empiryczne modele regresyjne dotyczące związku pomiędzy wskaźnikami mechanicznych uszkodzeń a zawartością białka i azotanów wyjaśniają w stopniu zadawalającym tę zależność (R2 = 72% i R2 = 79%).

The purpose of the studies was to determine relations between the content of the proteins and nitrates and the structure of the mechanical damages to the potato bulbs. The studies covered: two potato variations, cultivated on two different types of soil, for three consecutive years. Four types of fertilizers were used. The analyzed quality parameters of the potato bulbs were significantly dependant from the experiment factors. The empirical regressive models, proposed in the study, defining the relation between mechanical damage and protein and nitrate content explain to a satisfactory degree this relation (R2 = 72% and R2 = 79%).

Badania prowadzono przez okres trzech kolejnych lat tj. 2000-2002. Obejmowały dwie odmiany ziemniaka: Baszta i Irga. Dotyczyły oceny zmian wewnętrznych bulw w wyniku zmiennego nawożenia i uprawy na dwóch różnych glebach. Badano skład chemiczny, wady wewnętrzne typu: rdzawa plamistość miąższu, rdzawa pustowatość serc, ciemne plamy pouszkodzeniowe, mechaniczne uszkodzenia wewnętrzne. Przeanalizowano również wysokość plonu i udział procentowy frakcji powyżej 50 mm. Wpływ czynników doświadczenia na większość badanych cech bulw okazał się istotny. Bulwy duże w większym stopniu ulegały uszkodzeniom mechanicznym i zawierały więcej wad typu rdzawa plamistość miąższu.

The study was carried out for three consecutive years: 2000-2002. It covered two varieties of potato: 'Baszta' and 'Irga'. It deals with an assessment of changes of internal bulbs in result of changing fertilisation and cultivalion on two different types of soil. Chemical content and internal defects including rusty brown spots on parenchyma, brown centre and hollow heart, dark damage-related spots, mechanical internal damages were analysed. The quantity of yield and percentage of fraction above 50 mm were analysed as well. It turned out that those elements had a significant influence on most of analysed bulb qualities. Big bulbs were more prone to mechanical damages and had more defects like rusty spots on parenchyma.
