Separatory są urządzeniami do podczyszczania ścieków zawierających substancje, które są albo niebezpieczne dla środowiska (np. węglowodory ropopochodne), albo powodują problemy eksploatacyjne instalacji kanalizacyjnej (np. tłuszcze). Nawet jeśli prawo nie wymaga ich stosowania, obecność separatorów w instalacji może znacząco ograniczyć występowanie sytuacji awaryjnych.

Development of civilization brought about the excessive amounts of grease in certain places, like in case of other compounds essential in biosphere, what is the reason of disadvantageous phenomena in natural environment. The significant source of grease substances is wastewater. The wastewater treatment standards worked out in the past do not assure the appropriate protection of wastewater receivers from excessive inflow of grease substances. Regarding this fact more attention should be paid to lipids removal in municipal sewage treatment plants, although Polish regulations do not force such action. Apart from influencing wastewater receivers fats and oils contained in raw wastewater stream cause technological disturbances and operational problems in the treatment plants. One of the most serious problems in activated sludge systems is rising sludge. For determination of grease and oil removal efficiency the mentioned substances content was analysed in raw and treated sewage streams, wastes and sludges from municipal sewage treatment plant with classical technological system. Grease and oil concentration was determined by Soxhlet extraction with petroleum ether. Obtained results show that average grease substances removal was 42.7%. The biggest loading of the substances was removed with primary sludge. Significant, but lower amounts of grease and oil were removed in waste activated sludge stream. Moreover 31.3% loss of grease and oil was found during the sludge treatment. Probably it was the effect of microbiological degradation in the digestion tank. It was also found that 50% of day loading of grease substances, introduced to sludge treatment line was returned with sludge waters to raw sewage inflow. The balance of obtained results shows there is no grease and oil degradation in wastewater treatment line. Too short hydraulic retention time of wastewater and activated sludge mixing in biological stage may be the reason. Probably only sorption of grease and oil on activated sludge flocks occurs and removal in waste activated sludge stream. Partial degradation occurs in sludge treatment facilities. Analyses carried out show the possibility of decrease of grease and oil substances content in municipal sewage treatment plant effluents through removal of that substances from sludge waters returning to sewage treatment line.
