For several decades, geographers have been actively involved in the development of Geographic Information Science and Technology (GI S&T). In this paper, the questions were asked about the future role of geography in teaching GI S&T, and if geography would play any role in GI S&T teaching at all. The answers to these questions were given based on teaching experience of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Management, Jagiellonian University. First classes in GI S&T at the Jagiellonian University took place in the academic year 1992/1993; later on, the GI S&T curriculum was subject to many changes, especially in the late 1990s. Currently, a new revision of GI S&T curriculum is ongoing, in relation to the implementation of master studies in geography with GI S&T specialization, which are expected to start in the academic year 2008/2009. This revision is based on many years of experience and a number of other teaching models in Poland and abroad. It was assumed that students completing the new study programme should be aware of various aspects of geographic information while solving geographic problems, and to reflect upon the impact of geographic information technology on research methodologies and practical actions at any stage. In the paper, it was claimed that the graduates of the GI S&T study programme would have competences of critical importance for the successful implementation of the INSPIRE Directive. Indeed, they might become ideal users of the spatial information infrastructures being constructed, who would know how to combine geographical knowledge with IT skills. This conclusion allows to evaluate optimistically the future significance of geography in the GI S&T teaching, especially in the context of current rapid developments in the geographic data markets.
