The overhead contact system is an element of the railway infrastructure without reserve. Its task is to provide electricity to the traction ' vehicles. A particular solution to the overhead contact line is overhead conductor rail, often called overhead tunnel line. It is characterized by compact design, it does not require a large space. The essential element of this solution is aluminium hollow section. Although the cost of building a overhead conductor rail exceeds the cost of building the overhead contact line with catenary suspension, due to the possibility of decreased height of a tunnel the entire investment is cheaper. Overhead conductor rail, in addition to the tunnels, it is operated under wide viaducts, bridges bascule and complex technical facilities for rail vehicles. The paper shows the properties of the aluminium conductor rail as the profile of the section, its construction, mounting, described transition area from catenary to overhead conductor rail. In Europe, there are several companies that specialize in the design, manufacture and installation of overhead conductor rails. In the paper have been used materials of company: Siemens AG (conductor rail S/cat SRj, Furrer+Frey AG (CR2 and CR3HS conductor rail) and Electren SA (conductor rail GSSTj and experience with IK's research in the field. Each of these companies has its own solutions of overhead conductor rail structures.
