W krainie jezior centralnej Florydy pomiędzy Tampą a Orlando powstaje najbardziej nowoczesny kampus w USA - Florida Polytechnic University (FPU), który jest zupełnie nowym uniwersytetem w systemie uczelni publicznych stanu Floryda. W sierpniu 2014 pierwszych 525 osób rozpoczęło naukę w uczelni, która realizuje program oparty na polityce STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Program ten ma na celu zwiększenie ilości i jakości kadry dla przemysłu. Ośrodki STEM działają już przy wielu uczelniach w USA, jednak FPU to pierwszy uniwersytet specjalizujący się wyłącznie w naukach ścisłych.

This most modern Polytechnic University was built near Lakeland, Florida. The building designed by Santiago Calatrava, completed in February 2014, has become the iconic dominant for the University campus. The project has been designed to provide basic didactic infrastructure as well as to reflect innovative educational policy of the university. The building structure is composed of two elements: an openwork pergola covering the walkways around the building, and a dome. The dome has been equipped with an innovative system of shades which can be adjusted to the sun position, and therefore, the amount of sunlight inside the building can be controlled.
