The courses listed under the programmes of study offered by the Faculty of Education, University of Prešov provide a platform for developing mathematical literacy of students - prospective teachers in primary school. The courses syllabi include OECD PISA tasks. They are utilized as means of exploration of theoretical starting points in certain domains of arithmetic and algebra. The article offers the task analysis carried out from the aspect of the present elements of mathematical literacy. "Świat potrzebuje mądrości jak nigdy dotąd, a jeśli poziom wiedzy będzie w przyszłości nadal rósł, świat będzie potrzebował mądrości w jeszcze większym stopniu niż obecnie". Słowa te napisał Bertrand Russell w połowie zeszłego wieku. Czy mają dziś jakąś wartość? Co je łączy z matematyką, informatyką czy nawet polityką? Artykuł ten jest próbą odpowiedzi na te właśnie pytania

The world needs wisdom as it has never needed it before, and if knowledge continues to increase, the world will need wisdom in the future even more that it does now.this statement by Bertrand Russell was formulated in the middle of the twentieth century. Does it make any sense nowadays? Maybe one could risk saying that it is evergreen. Does it relate to mathematics, computer science or even politics? This paper is at least a partial answer to these questions.
