This article is the result of the research carried out by the author in creating new public spaces and shaping contemporary urban-forming trends in the conditions of globalization. In his research (through literature criticism and in situ field research) the author analyzes selected contemporary architectural realizations in Poland over the last decades, comparing them with similar works around the world, assessing their impact on shaping the cities’ build environment. The comparison is made through the analysis of such factors as: the construction of the form, elements of architecture and construction affecting the location, visibility, perception and created relations between the building and the surroundings.

Artykuł jest wynikiem kontynuacji badań prowadzonych przez autora w zakresie tworzenia nowych przestrzeni publicznych i kształtowania współczesnych trendów miastotwórczych w warunkach globalizacji. W swoich badaniach (poprzez krytykę literatury i badania terenowe ,,in situ’’) autor dokonuje analizy wybranych współczesnych realizacji architektonicznych w Polsce na przestrzeni ostatnich kilkudziesięciu lat, porównując je z dziełami światowymi, oceniając ich wpływ na kształtowanie środowiska zbudowanego miast. Porównanie dokonywane jest poprzez analizę takich czynników jak: budowa formy, elementy architektury i konstrukcji wpływające na lokalizację, wyeksponowanie, postrzeganie oraz wytworzone relacje pomiędzy budynkiem a otoczeniem.

The article presents the problems of building and maintaining urban transport infrastructure in Warsaw at the turn of the 20th century. The text concerns Kajetan Mościcki (1855-1933), engineer, who was appointed by the acting Mayor of Warsaw, General Sokrates Starynkiewicz, to the position of senior city engineer and head of the municipal construction department, where he worked from 1889 to 1909. During this period, he paved the streets which were worn or damaged by sewerage works with wooden blocks and covered the sidewalks with concrete slabs. He designed the first slip road in the Kingdom of Poland in the form of a spiral, and he also participated in the construction of the oldest road engineering structures made of reinforced concrete, located in Ujazdowski Park and on Karowa street in Warsaw, the first Warsaw power plant and the second city bridge across the Vistula. In addition to his professional activity, Kajetan Mościcki was an inventor in the fields of mechanics and electrical engineering. At the end of his life, he founded an award that the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences was to grant to Polish scientists for outstanding achievements.

Technical parameters of cast iron plates, approximate wear and tear in various periods and ways of street paving were described. There are also listed system defects which caused to cease using it.

W Bochni, podobnie jak w wielu innych miastach i miasteczkach jest historyczny rynek, który utracił swoją dawną funkcję. Autor przeanalizował układ drogowy i ruch w sąsiedztwie rynku. Na postawie analizy zaprojektował alternatywnie przebudowę skrzyżowań, a także obliczył zmienności ruchu i przepustowości na wlotach skrzyżowań. Wybrał właściwe rozwiązania i zaproponował zmiany w organizacji ruchu. To powinno znacznie usprawnić poruszanie się w centrum miasta i poprawić bezpieczeństwo ruchu.

In Bochnia, like in many other towns and small towns, is historical market square which lost its former function. The author analyzed road scheme and traffic in the neighborhood of market square. On the base of this analysis he designed alternative reconstruction of intersections as well as calculated traffic changes and capacity on intersection inlets. He selected right solutions and proposed changes in traffic organization. This should streamline traffic and improve road safety.

Public open spaces can positively contribute to people’s quality of life. With the world’s growing urban population, especially in developing countries, quality public spaces are becoming increasingly important. Streets are considered important public spaces for people-environment interactions. Streets play an important social role in communities’ lives and can contribute to a sense of community. Using people-environment interaction as theoretical framework, the study used a qualitative approach to explore social dynamics in a multi-modal street (Helen Joseph Street) in a South Africa metropolitan city (Pretoria). Aspects of ethnography was applied using observations and semi-structured interviews to generate data from 32 participants about social dynamics in the street. Themes that emerged from the content analysis of the data include: the multi-functional role of the street, serving an economic, cultural, social, political and functional role; the generation of vigorous social interaction with multi-levels of contact/interaction; the interrelated nature of the social and spatial/built environment; the role of the street space in facilitating social interaction and being supportive of the social environment. The findings illustrate the interrelatedness and complexity of people and their environment in Helen Joseph Street. It is suggested that streets have the potential to positively impact on people’s social lives. Streets can act as platforms for social interaction by becoming self-reinforced social spaces that attract people and in return change urban spaces into vibrant public spaces.

The article is a crucial text on the history of Polish squares and marketplaces. The author presents their growing importance, first of all from the transport point of view and later, in the 70s and 80s, as a significant part of social and cultural urban life. There are a lot of quotes given on how these types of architectural sites have been defined. It is strongly underlined that squares act as unique ‘urban hearts’ - small ‘towns’ that play a significant role in improving citizens’ lives. The author neatly presents examples of four squares and the changes which they have undergone throughout the years, all of which is illustrated on the included photo.

Wprawdzie w znowelizowanej ustawie o drogach publicznych z 1948 r. znalazł się zapis o placach miejskich i wiejskich, a w 1985 r. zapisano nawet, że place przed dworcami zaliczone są do dróg wewnętrznych, ale zapisy te nie rozwiązywały żadnego zagadnienia związanego z placami, a tym bardziej z tak specyficznymi placami, jakimi są rynki, tworzącymi unikatową przestrzeń miejską. Ta przestrzeń od średniowiecza była w polskich miastach, i nie tylko polskich, najbardziej rozpoznawalna, czytelna i zrozumiała, a co ważne akceptowalna społecznie.

Lata 70. i początek lat 80. XX w. przyniosły istotne ożywienie działań władz centralnych na rzecz dróg w miastach. Symbolem tego ożywienia było opracowanie przez ówczesny Instytut Gospodarki Komunalnej i Ministerstwo Gospodarki Terenowej i Ochrony Środowiska „Raportu o stanie dróg w miastach” i w oparciu o zawarte w nim dane przygotowanie w 1972 r. „Programu rozwoju drogownictwa miejskiego na lata 1973-1990”, a także powołanie w istniejącym resortowym Instytucie Naukowym GK Zakładu Technologii i Organizacji Drogownictwa w Krakowie oraz Samodzielnej Pracowni Drogownictwa Miejskiego we Wrocławiu.

The topic of roads is being widely discussed in the Polish media. Everyone is highlighting its importance for the country’s development and for civil development in general. Under the topic of the road system, there are many other smaller issues to be found. That is why the author draws a line between the meaning of two terms, very often confused: road and street. This text is the third part of a series of three articles under the general title of ‘90 years of fighting for the streets’. In this part, the author presents the contemporary view on the meaning of the word ‘street’. He also discusses their changes throughout the years, until the present day. There is also a reflection on the future of the Polish street.

Temat drogi nie schodzi dzisiaj z pierwszych stron gazet codziennych i periodyków. Wszyscy bowiem podkreślają ich ważność, znaczenie dla rozwoju kraju i w ogóle dla cywilizacji. Skoro wszyscy są drogowcami lub użytkownikami dróg, to i wszyscy uzurpują sobie prawo do narzekania na ich stan oraz prawo do zgłaszania własnych koncepcji na uzdrowienie tej części gospodarki narodowej. Rozprawiający o drogach, na ogół, ograniczają się do wizji sieci autostrad przecinających kraj wzdłuż i wszerz, a nawet po bokach, dróg ekspresowych łączących, może nie tyle miasta, ile stadiony, na których ma się odbywać największe show początku XXI wieku.

This text is the first part of a series of three articles under the general title of ‘90 Years of Fighting for the Streets’. In this introduction, the author presents the history of Polish streets from the years of dependency under the Partitions to the period between the First and the Second World War. There are also street definitions and the evolution of the name throughout the years. The reader finds out how they were divided and the importance of street width. It is worth mentioning that the author has also prepared a number of interesting quotations, ranging from legal acts to historical books and past publications.

Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje prowadzone w Zakładzie Kompozycji Urbanistycznej Instytutu Projektowania Urbanistycznego Wydziału Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej badania naukowe dotyczące geometrycznych aspektów projektowania przestrzennego przebiegu drogi wspomagającego estetykę i czytelność przestrzeni. Dla rozwiązywania dynamicznych problemów ruchu drogowego i mobilności w planowaniu "serc miasta" proponuje się nowe podejście do wizualizacji w formie rzeczywistości wirtualnej oraz nowe narzędzia badawcze, jakimi są symulatory ruchu. Metody symulacji w rzeczywistości wirtualnej są obecnie najbardziej obiecującymi narzędziami do analizowania zależności pomiędzy projektowaną infrastrukturą drogową (drogi, ulice, ciągi piesze, ścieżki rowerowe i inne widoczne elementy infrastruktury drogowej), pojazdem i użytkownikiem drogi (kierowcą, pieszym). Celem artykułu jest zatem ukazanie ogromnych potencjalnych możliwości nowo powstającej nauki wizualizacji.

This paper presents the research studies conducted at the Institute of Urban Design at the Faculty of Architecture, Cracow University of Technology. This studies deals with geometric aspects of designing spatial road layout which enhance aesthetics and legibility of designed space. To solve problems of traffic and mobility in planning "hearts of the city", new approach to virtual reality visualization and new tool, namely driving simulator, are proposed. Virtual reality simulation is the most promising tool for analyzing the interaction between designed road infrastructure (street, road pavement, sidewalks, biking path, pedestrians walks, and all visible road architecture elements), vehicle and road user (driver). The discussion is concluded with emphasizing great potentials of the new emerging science of visualization, presenting the successive studies results.

Ulica Piotrkowska, która kiedyś stanowiła główny trakt komunikacyjny, a w latach 1993-97 stała się pasażem pieszym, dziś pełni rolę wizytówki miasta. Stanowi ogromny kontrast dla innych ulic centrum łodzi, których przestrzeń przedstawia obraz degradacji i zaniedbania. Całościowe spojrzenie na przemiany zachodzące w centrum miasta pokazuje, jakie decyzje przestrzenne wpłynęły na jego dzisiejszy wygląd.

Piotrkowska Street is the most significant street in Łódź. It used to be an axis of the city, as reveals plan from the year 1823, nowadays it is an element that creates character of the city. In the years 1993-97 its northern part became pedestrian area. The global look over the changes that occurred in the city center shows how the decisions on space arrangement influenced its present appearance. Some decisions on functionality and space, taken after the year 1960, effected in development of arterial roads in the historical area of the city. In fact, carrying out the ambitious ideas resulted in demolishing significant part of the city compact settlement, which cultural value has been remarked in the end of XX century. Due to the widening of Zachodnia Street at the fragment of four quarters, well-like courtyards typical for Łódź has benn deprived of their frontages. New public space has been arranged into random layout in the form of open courtyards that are placed deep into quarters. As a result of developing wide arterial roads West-East, there has been created space of new type, spoiling value of existing settlement. Since the time of closing Piotrkowska Street for the traffic, Zachodnia - Kościuszki Street became the most important arterial road of the city center. Together with perpendicular streets and Sienkiewicza Street it forms a traffic and parking system for Piotrkowska Street, as it was established by former decisions.
