Pierwsza tablica z napisem ulica Piotrkowska została umieszczona w 1823 r. na początku dzisiejszej ul. Nowomiejskiej przy moście na rzece Łódce. Dwa lata wcześniej twórca planu regulacyjnego Rajmund Rembieliński, prostując linię istniejącego „traktu piotrowskiego", wyznaczył jej ostateczny bieg oraz przebieg przecinających ją ulic, a tereny wokół Piotrkowskiej podzielił na parcele. Dawny „trakt piotrkowski" liczy 4,1 km długości i wciąż ma niepowtarzalny charakter ulicy odzwierciedlającej dzieje Łodzi. Jej architektoniczna obudowa przybliża kolejne okresy formowania wielkomiejskiej struktury ośrodka. Niestety, w następstwie pojawienia się dwóch znaczących kompleksów o przeznaczeniu publicznym - tj. Galerii Łódzkiej przy al. J. Piłsudskiego, a nieco później ogromnego centrum kulturalno-handlowego Manufaktura, zlokalizowanego na obszarze dawnego imperium fabrycznego I. K. Poznańskiego o powierzchni blisko 26 ha - obecnie stopniowo zamiera aktywność ulicy jako głównego traktu handlowo-usługowego. W obliczu tego zjawiska nagląca stała się potrzeba wykreowania nowego wizerunku Piotrkowskiej, aby ponownie przywrócić jej rangę reprezentacyjnej ulicy miasta.

The first plate with the words "Piotrkowska Street" written on it was placed in 1823, at the beginning of the current Nowomiejska Street, next to the Łódka River Bridge. Two years earlier, the creator of the Regulation Plan, Rajmund Rembielinski, shaped both the "piotrkowska road" as well as the crossing streets along with the surrounding areas divided into building plots. The old "piotrkowska road" measures 4,1 km in length and retains its unique character of a street reflecting the history of Łódź. The architectural design of the street brings closer the successive stages of the formation of the urban structure of the city. Unfortunately, due to the creation of two important shopping and cultural centres, "Galeria Łódzka" on The J. Piłsudski Avenue and "Manufaktura", covering an area of 26 ha, previously known as "The Factory Empire of J. K. Poznański", the Piotrkowska Street is slowly losing its commercial importance. In the light of these events, there is a great need for creating a new face for the Piotrkowska Street, in order to return it to the former role of the premier symbol of the city.

Two streets - Piotrkowska Street and Piłsudski Avenue in the same city and crossing each other are two separate worlds and represent two different types of "urban style" in Łódź. At the same time they play an important role in the life of the city and each is inseparably associated with the city centre. However, both fulfill this role differently and it seems like they form two separate centres of a completely different nature, though they function close to each other. The development of the Piotrkowska street space is in fact a closed process. On the other hand, the ongoing transformation of the Pilsudski Avenue has so far affected only some fragments of it. The development of commercial space in this area will probably continue. It is important to base the development of this area on activities that will combine the already existing variety and focus on creating a defined image. It turns out that meeting all the official guidelines in the construction of individual edifices does not guarantee spatial order. It seems necessary to create a set of joining elements to arrange larger parts of public space and at the same time give it thorough-bred appearance. As both streets interact it is important that they should be complementary to each other in terms of their urban style to extract their real nature and best features. It is also vital that man-friendly space is created.
