The article presents calculation results aimed at supporting or refuting a thesis concerning checkerboard or diagonal system of gravitational forces between settlement centers of Poland. That issue was analyzed at various levels of administrative-settlement hierarchy of Poland (the capital of the country, remaining metropolitan centers, other voivodship or poviat centers, etc.). Empirical verification of the question posed in the title consisted in utilizing of gravitation model for calculating interaction forces between individual centers. The research studies proved that the system of settlement network and directions of gravitational forces are diversified, depending on the hierarchical level to be analyzed. On the higher administrative-functional levels, especially in relations with the capital of Warsaw, these gravitational forces are primarily of diagonal character. However, at the lowest levels the existing relations are marked by longitudinal and latitudinal pattern. On account of the weight of the key settlement centers in the socioeconomic system, the presented analyses clearly show that most favourable is a diagonal, and definitely not checkerboard, shaping of the transport system in Poland.
