Tynki szlachetne były nieodłącznym elementem architektury XX wieku. Obecnie nastąpiły znaczące przemiany technologii budowlanych, co spowodowało radykalne zmiany technik wykonania tynków szlachetnych. Dlatego konieczne jest omówienie tradycyjnej technologii wykonywania tynków, której znajomość jest niezbędna przy konserwacji i odtwarzaniu elewacyjnych wypraw w budynkach z I połowy XX wieku. Dekoracje elewacji w tym okresie to zarówno imitacja okładzin kamiennych, jak i wykorzystanie dekoracyjnego potencjału struktury i faktury powierzchni tynków. Na podstawie publikacji źródłowych przedstawione zostały szczegółowe informacje na temat sposobów wykonywania różnych rodzajów tynków szlachetnych.

Stuccoes were an intrinsic element of architecture of the 20th century. Nowadays, significant changes took place regarding construction technology, which caused radical changes in techniques of preparation of stuccoes. Therefore, it is necessary to describe the traditional technology of preparation of stuccoes, the knowledge of which is essential in conservation and reconstruction of elevation coatings in buildings from the first half of the 20th century. Decorations of elevations during that period include both imitation of stone facings as well as use of decorative potential of the structure and texture of the stucco surface. Based on source publications, the author presents detailed information on the methods of preparation of different kinds of stuccoes.

Artykuł porusza problematykę ochrony zewnętrznych wypraw tynkowych z okresu międzywojnia. Temat ten, wobec intensyfikacji prac remontowych, nowych środków i metod renowacyjnych oraz stopniowej degradacji zasobu zasługuje na szczególną uwagę. Mimo starań podejmowanych przez środowiska konserwatorów i architektów, społeczna świadomość wartości architektury modernistycznej jest bardzo niska, stąd jej niszczenie i żywiołowe przekształcenia Nie istnieją także mechanizmy prawne ani administracyjne, które mogłyby skutecznie przeciwdziałać tym procesom.

This paper discusses selected issues concerning protection and conservation of rendered surfaces in buildings erected during the mid-war period. The topic has previously been visited by scholars, however increased renovation work, new materials introduced to conservation practice and gradual degradation bring about a threat to this resource. Still, the Modernist architecture of the mid-war era has not been widely recognised. Uncontrolled adaptive use projects (such as the addition of thermal insulation, general renovation and the refreshing of façades) have caused irreversible damage to these historic structures. The area of research covers Cracow and buildings erected mainly during the 1930’s. Case studies and interviews with art restorers allow the presentation chief causes of damage, state of conservation along with core dilemmas and contemporary practice for conservation and renovation of Modernist stuccos. The need of overall protection of the resource is suggested in conclusion.

Elewacje XX-wiecznych budynków pokrytych tynkami szlachetnymi wciąż są traktowane z dużą nonszalancją, na skutek czego tynki te są wymieniane lub znikają pod warstwą termoizolacji. Problemem jest niezrozumienie historycznych i estetycznych wartości wypraw tynkarskich, a także brak wiedzy o sposobach ich wykonywania. Wartość materii XX-wiecznej nie jest mniejsza niż tej pochodzącej z epok starszych, a upływ czasu sprawia, że traktowanie jej jako współczesnej staje się całkowicie nieuzasadnione. Podczas modernizacji budynków należy respektować ideowe założenia stylu i dążyć do zachowania w możliwie największym stopniu oryginalnej substancji.

Elevations of 20th century buildings covered with stuccoes are still treated with great nonchalance, as a result of which these stuccoes are replaced or disappear under a layer of thermal insulation. The problem lies in lack of understanding of historical and aesthetic values of plaster coatings as well as lack of knowledge about the methods of their creation. The value of the 20th century matter is not lesser than value of the matter dating from earlier periods, and because the flow of time treating it as contemporary becomes completely unjustified. During modernization of buildings, one should respect ideological assumptions of the style and strive to maintain the original substance to the highest possible degree.
