Study of driver behaviour at turbo-roundabouts

The article presents the results of preliminary research into the behaviour of drivers at turbo-roundabouts. The subject of the research included the frequency of driver behaviour against the traffic rules, and the speed at which vehicles drive through turbo-roundabouts. One of the crucial problems which was analysed was the influence of different kinds of traffic lane division on the behaviour of drivers. The analysis results affirm that the raised lane dividers can visibly improve the propensity of drivers to stay within the designated traffic corridor. However, it does not eliminate the phenomenon of improper lane changing on circulatory roadway. The physical separation of traffic lanes has not been determined to introduce any additional hazard. The speed of vehicles encroaching upon the neighbouring traffic corridor is visibly higher than this of vehicles following traffic rules. Using crash prediction models developed for single- and multi-lane roundabouts, the authors of the research estimated that lane dividers may reduce the number of crashes from about 10% to 17%.

W artykule przedstawiono doświadczenia i uwagi dotyczące projektowania rond dwupasowych. Takie ronda są efektem poszukiwań optymalnego rozwiązania dla skrzyżowań charakteryzujących się dużymi wahaniami natężeń ruchu. Referat prezentuje ronda dwupasowe, na których przejazd w relacji "na wprost" przez rondo odbywa się dwoma pasami, skręt "w prawo" jest możliwy tylko z pasa prawego, a skręt "w lewo" tylko z pasa lewego na wlocie (wewnętrznego na rondzie). Rozwiązanie to eliminuje wady ronda tradycyjnego, na którym występują częste kolizje przy opuszczaniu ronda. Autor podejmuje dyskusję nad dalszym rozwojem rond w praktyce krajowej, w tym celowości i sposobów wprowadzania rond dwupasowych.

The experiences and remarks referring to double-lane roundabout designing have been presented in the paper. Such roundabouts are the effect of searching for optimal designs for intersections with large traffic flows variations. The double-lane roundabouts, where straight through movement is performed from two lanes, the right turn movement uses only right lane and the left turn uses left lane is presented in the paper. The design eliminates disadvantages of conventional roundabout, where there are many traffic conflicts while leaving the roundabout. The discussion under development of roundabout in national practice, including arguments for their design and way of implementing of the double-lane roundabout have been given.
