Characterization of Friction Properties During Machining of Various Stainless Steels

Many issues in machining are related to interface characteristics, such as the friction coefficient, adhesive layer, or heat transfer coefficient. A specially designed tribometer is used to quantify these contact parameters in the case of four stainless steels (three austenite grade with controlled composition and an austenito-ferritic one). The sensitivity to sliding velocity and coatings is investigated. It is highlighted that the contact pressure effect is limited compared with the influence of sliding speed. Moreover, tool damage can also be explained by local phenomena exhibited by the tribometer, such as adhesion layer or thermal aspects, which are critical in case of stainless steels.

Artykuł prezentuje metodykę i przykładowe wyniki badań tarcia spoczynkowego miniaturowych łożysk ślizgowych polimer-polimer. Przedstawiono parametry badanych łożysk, budowę stanowiska badawczego z uwzględnieniem elementów toru akwizycji danych, metodykę przeprowadzania pomiarów wraz z wartościami zadawanych parametrów wejściowych oraz sposób obróbki danych pomiarowych. W dalszej części przedstawiono wybrane wyniki badań tarcia oraz wnioski z przeprowadzonych eksperymentów.

This paper presents methodology and selected results for friction test experiments on miniature journal polymer-on-polymer bearings. There is not so much data regarding polymer versus polymer frictional contacts in particular used in miniature devices. In the first paragraph there is introduction followed by second paragraph with test rig design (Fig. 1), tested bearing dimensions (Fig. 2) and all experimental parameters. Step-by-step experiment process, data acquisition and 3-stage data processing is described. The method for experimental estimation of the static friction coefficient is shown. In the third paragraph the discussion of the experimental results is presented. On several plots the selected experimental data are show illustrating influence of particular parameters (sliding speed, bearing load and standstill time under load before starting to slide) on the friction coefficient. The fourth paragraph specifies conclusions from the experiments and the references are listed at the end.

Zjawisko tarcia występujące podczas zbioru, transportu, składowania i obróbki podzbiorowej plonu ziemniaków w dużym stopniu determinuje przebieg procesu technologicznego. Celem badań była analiza wpływu rodzaju nawożenia na wartości: współczynnika tarcia zewnętrznego bulw o podłoże gumowe, wskaźnika wypełnienia gabarytowego bulw oraz współczynników sferyczności bulw. Obiektami doświadczenia były odmiany ziemniaków: Baszta, Irga i Salto i rodzaj nawożenia. Stosowano nawozy: Polli-Pam, zielone i mineralne. Współczynniki sferyczności wyznaczono metodą wideo-komputerowo, a współczynnik tarcia kinetycznego metodą trybometryczną. Od notowano wpływ rodzaju nawożenia na badane właściwości bulw, choć należy podkreślić, że nie we wszystkich kombinacjach doświadczenia różnice pomiędzy wartościami średnimi są statystycznie istotne.

The course of the technological process of harvesting, transport, conservation and post-harvest treatment of the potato crop is influenced to a large extent by the phenomenon of friction. The purpose of the investigation was the analysis of the influence of the kind of manure applied on the coefficient of external friction of tubers upon a rubber under-layer, the index of tubers' mass filling and the coefficient of tubers' spherical shape. The object of the experiment were the potato cultivars Baszta, Irga and Salto and the type of maturing. Polli-Pam, green manures and mineral fertilizers were used. The coefficient of shape was determined by the video-computer method and the kinetic friction coefficient by means of a tribometer. An influence of the kind of manure upon the investigated parameters was visible, although it should be noted that the observed differences between mean values were not statistically strong in all the combinations of the experiment.
