Special attention was paid to environmental design, evaluation and minimizing environmental impact of structures throughout their design life. International standards and recommendations were quoted concerning the life of structures.

Buildings maintain their original shape for some time after their completion. Thereafter, they begin to deteriorate gradually. Their technical and aesthetical longevity is diverse and depends on many acting factors. First of all, the rules of building art should be obeyed while designing and constructing as well as the selection of adequate building materials is necessary. A very important factor, which determines their durability, is the local climate. The most adverse climatic conditions for buildings are in the coastal localities. One can perceive there best the impact of particular climatic factors on accelerated deterioration of building structures, as opposed to other more advantageous geographical situations. The paper presents the results of observations in situ and the analysis of technical and aesthetical condition of selected buildings in some cities in the Netherlands and Spain, with the aim of elucidating the reasons of their aesthetical and technical deterioration.

Obiekty architektoniczne zachowują swoją pierwotną formę przez pewien czas po oddaniu ich do użytku, po czym ulegają stopniowej degradacji. Ich trwałość techniczna i estetyczna jest bardzo zróżnicowana i zależna od wielu czynników. Przede wszystkim od przestrzegania reguł sztuki budowlanej przy projektowaniu i realizacji oraz doboru odpowiednich materiałów. Niezwykle istotnym czynnikiem wpływającym na ich trwałość jest miejscowy klimat. Jedne z najtrudniejszych warunków klimatycznych dla budynków panują w lokalizacjach nadmorskich. W takich miejscach można najlepiej obserwować wpływ poszczególnych czynników klimatycznych na przyspieszoną w stosunku do innych lokalizacji degradację tkanki budowlanej. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki obserwacji in situ oraz analizy stanu technicznego wybranych obiektów w miejscowościach nadmorskich Holandii i Hiszpanii w celu sformułowania wniosków związanych z ich degradacją techniczną i estetyczną.

Life expectancy in architecture and construction is defined in different ways. Technical durability, which is crucial for the existence and usability of buildings, seems to be the most important of them. Designers and investors' attitude towards this problem is inconsistent. The paradigm of sustainable architecture brought a different approach to this issue and made it more significant both in professional discussion and practice. The durability of buildings with its relation to embodied energy in technologies and materials has become an important feature of architecture and brought substantial modification to the designing process. This paper presents different approaches to the problem in some countries as well as ambiguities and inconsistencies in pertinent views.

Trwałość w architekturze i budownictwie jest określana na kilka sposobów. Spośród nich najważniejsza jest trwałość techniczna decydująca o istnieniu obiektów oraz o ich cechach użytkowych. Można zauważyć niekonsekwentną postawę zarówno projektantów, jak i inwestorów wobec tej cechy budynków. Paradygmat architektury zrównoważonej spowodował odmienne od dotychczasowego spojrzenie na tę kwestię i przyczynił się do znacznego dowartościowania zagadnienia zarówno w dyskusjach profesjonalnych, jak i w praktyce projektowej. Trwałość techniczna budynków i jej związek z energochłonnością technologii i materiałów budowlanych stały się bardzo istotne, co spowodowało znaczące zmiany w procesie projektowania architektoniczno-budowlanego. Artykuł przedstawia zróżnicowane podejście do tego zagadnienia w niektórych krajach oraz niejasności i niekonsekwencje w panujących na ten temat poglądach.

W pracy zaprezentowano zastosowanie metody wizualnej do oceny stanu technicznego budynków mieszkalnych, zrealizowanych w uprzemysłowionej technologii wielkopłytowej. Przedstawiono przebieg i wyniki badania wybranego elementu budynku wielkopłytowego. Na podstawie wyników badania stropodachu wentylowanego nieużytkowanego przeanalizowano możliwość zastosowania metody do prognozowania trwałości budynków i ich elementów, wykonanych w technologii OWT.

The visual method for evaluation of technical condition of great-panel apartment buildings is presented in this study. The course and results of examinations of one selected element of great-panel building is shown. On the basis of test results of ventilated non-usable attic, the possibility of applying this method for forecasting of durability of building and their elements constructed in OWT technology system has been analyzed.

The fascinating question posed in the Manifesto of the Conference - whether a ruin as a building created by Time still lies within the limits of architecture - might be answered by converting the Giedion’s title into the equation...if there is Space and Time in ruins, they must be Architecture. Not to mention Piranesi, the father of all Romantic and Sentimental architecture, the keen observer of antique ruins. Nonetheless our approach will be based on numerous - and various - quotations in order to prove that in certain regions all architecture is in ruin. This complies not solely with the notorious Ruinenwert theory by Speer, but with the completely opposing notions - that of surrealist emblems, ruins and mannequins, and their uncanny character. Ruins of the past lead their uncanny life full of desecrated churches and beheaded angels, behind the political frontiers. If death is the aim of all life...then is not a ruin the aim of all architecture? Repression of memory is typical for totalitarian regimes, writes Foster in his famous Compulsive Beauty. „A remembering that represses, such history is opposed to the surrealist concept of history that ruins in order to recover through an active return of the repressed"... Let us hope for that recovery beyond the frontiers - by means of ruined architecture.
