Areas of tropical karst create the most spectacular earth landscapes from a geomorphological perspective. These areas are characterized by a variety of specific forms resulting from the long-term karst-erosion dismemberment of terrains in favourable humid tropical conditions. Tropical karst areas are extremely diverse from a geomorphological point of view both in terms of local conditions of development and developmental stages. Among the many types of karst relief, the following two basic types can be recognized: fenglin (tower karst) and fengcong (cone karst). The other types can be treated as a mixture of these two basic types. To find potential quantitative rates characterizing the two main types, as well as the mixed types, we calculated fractal dimensions and cover factors of 17 areas located within the two well-known regions of South China Karst - Guilin and Huanjiang. The calculations show that the numerical characteristics obtained, especially the cover factor parameter, can be useful as complementary tools in the recognition and typology of tropical karst relief and landscapes.

The aim of the paper is to present briefly the most spectacular karstic regions in the northern Vietnam referred to their geotouristic potential and to provide some proposal of better logistic and scientific promotions of their values. On the other hand, this region is a perfect field-work site suitable for studying geological and geomorphological processes. In the future it can provide one of the best educational platforms for people (especially children) interested in recognizing natural processes, which have been changing our planet through millions years. Karst of Vietnam closely relates to the other tropical karst areas well-known throughout Southeastern Asia and, particularly, to the humid, monsoon, tropical karst prevailing in Southern China

Celem niniejszej pracy jest skrótowe przedstawienie najbardziej spektakularnych regionów tropikalnego krasu w północnym Wietnamie, w nawiązaniu do ich potencjału geoturystycznego. Wietnam jest doskonałym miejscem do prowadzenia badań nad powstaniem i rozwojem krasu oraz nad problemami jego ochrony. Z drugiej strony, regiony te są idealnym miejscem do prowadzenia prac terenowo-edukacyjnych dla turystów, a zwłaszcza dzieci i młodzieży, zainteresowanych licznymi procesami geologicznymi i geomorfologicznymi, które na przestrzeni milionów lat zmieniały naszą planetę i w dalszym ciągu ją kształtują. Kras północnowietnamski jest ściśle związany z innymi obszarami krasu tropikalnego Azji południowo-wschodniej, a szczególnie wilgotnego, monsunowo-tropikalnego krasu południowochińskiego
