Assessment of the transport intensity of the European economy

The excessive increase in transport intensity is one of the negative impacts on the economy. The costs borne due to transport activities are indirectly expressed by the volume of carriages (in tons) and by the scope of transport activity (in ton-kilometers). The result of social and economic activities are global product values and national incomes. This article shows the research on transport activity expressed through transport activity (in ton-kilometers) for all means of transport in total, the results of social and economic activities expressed using the gross domestic product, as well as shaping transport intensity of national economies in selected European countries. The analysis of the course of the exponential function curves, as well as polynomial curves has been carried out, and conclusions have been formulated on their bases.

Transport covers the area where mutual relations between economy and its requirements take place, and where it affects – not always in a positive way – its surrounding. Simultaneously, it is the transport that marks the direction for the infrastructure development, and hence for the whole economy. The close association between the economy and transport is confirmed by the amount of carriages in the world. The excessive increase of the transport intensity is one of the phenomena that negatively affect the economy. Expenditures incurred for the transport activities are expressed indirectly by the amount of traffic (in tonnes) and by the volume of transport performance (in tonne-km). In contrast, the effect of socio-economic activities are values of global product and national income. The article studied the transport activity in terms of volume of transport work (in tkm) total for all modes of transport, the effects of economic and social activity expressed by means of the value of gross domestic product, as well as the development of the transport intensity of national economies for the selected countries (regions) and for Poland. Analysed were both the curve with exponential functions and polynomial curves, and on their basis conclusions were drawn.

Transport obejmuje taki obszar działania, gdzie dochodzi do wzajemnych relacji między gospodarką i jej wymaganiami oraz jego – nie zawsze pozytywnym – oddziaływaniem na otoczenie. Jednocześnie to właśnie transport wyznacza kierunki rozwoju infrastruktury, a więc w jakimś zakresie całej gospodarki. Ścisły związek między gospodarką a transportem potwierdza wielkość pracy przewozowej na świecie. Do zjawisk negatywnie oddziaływujących na gospodarkę należy między innymi nadmierny wzrost transportochłonności. Nakłady ponoszone na działalność transportową są wyrażone pośrednio przez wielkość przewozów (w tonach) oraz przez wielkość pracy przewozowej (w tonokilometrach). Natomiast efektem działalności społeczno-gospodarczej są wartości produktu globalnego i dochodu narodowego. W artykule przeprowadzono badania działalności transportowej wyrażonej wielkością pracy przewozowej (w tkm) ogółem wszystkich gałęzi transportu, efekty działalności społeczno-gospodarczej wyrażonej wartością produktu krajowego brutto, a także kształtowanie się transportochłonności gospodarek narodowych w czasie wybranych krajów świata (regionach) oraz Polski. Dokonano analizy zarówno przebiegu krzywych funkcji wykładniczych, jak i krzywych wielomianu oraz na ich podstawie sformułowano wnioski.

Artykuł poświęcono problematyce powiązań przyczynowo-skutkowych energochłonności transportu samochodowego z transportochłonnością i poziomem podatków paliwowych. Składa się on z dwóch części, w pierwszej omówiono modele innych badaczy, koncentrujących się na podejściu VAR i VECM. W drugiej części przedstawiono analizę empiryczną za pomocą modelu VECM, dokonano identyfikacji podstawowych zależności pomiędzy omawianymi kategoriami, określono współwystępowanie tendencji dla omawianych zmiennych. Ponadto użyto test ADF oraz test śladu Johansena do określenia stacjonarności i rzędu kointegracji. W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań, znaleziono dwukierunkową zależność pomiędzy energochłonnością transportu samochodowego a transportochłonnością oraz jednokierunkową zależność pomiędzy poziomem podatków a energochłonnością lub transportochłonnością.

The issue of causal linkages among road transport energy intensity, transport intensity and level of tax fuels in the article was presented. The article consists of two parts. The first part presents the literature review, where models of other researchers who focused on VAR and VECM approaches were examined. The second part presents an empirical analysis, where VECM model was used. The fundamental linkages among these categories and coexistence trends of these variables were identified. It also the ADF test and the Johansen trace test were used to investigate the order of stationarity and cointegration. As a result of the research, the bidirectional linkage among road transport energy intensity and road intensity, and two unidirectional linkages among level of fuel taxes and energy intensity or transport intensity were found.

Trend related to the city mobility is now focused on limiting access of cars in city centres. One possible solution is traffic calming with urban toll system. In our paper we would like to focus on only one of the most important steps of introduction of the urban toll system - cost model and specifically to determine model process for optimisation of toll price for the limitation of transport intensity and maximize revenue from toll.
