Using regular expressions in translation memories

The paper presents the idea of using regular expressions in translation systems based on translation memories. Regular expressions (regexps) are used for: search for a match in the input sentence, search for an appropriate example in the translation memory and in the transfer of the input sentence into its equivalent. The application of transfer rules to translation memories supports the thesis, put forward in the paper, that Machine Translation and Computer-Aided Translation converge into the same direction.

High-quality machine translation between human languages has for a long time been an unattainable dream for many computer scientists involved in this fascinating and interdisciplinary field of the application of computers. The developed quite recently example-based machine translation technique seems to be a serious alternative to the existing automatic translation techniques. In the paper the usage of the example based machine translation technique for the development of system, which would be able to translate an unrestricted Italian text into Polish is proposed. The new approach to the example-based machine translation technique that takes into account the peculiarity of the Polish grammar is developed. The obtained primary results of the development of proposed system seem to be very promising and appear to be a step made in the right direction towards a fully-automatic high quality Italian-into-Polish machine translation system for unrestricted text.

Translacja automatyczna jest dziedziną nauki dostarczającą wiedzy o tym, jak programować komputery, aby były w stanie dokonywać automatycznych przekładów pomiędzy językami naturalnymi. Pomimo prawie pół wieku badań nad translacją automatyczną zadanie to jest jeszcze dalekie od swego ostatecznego rozwiązania. Opracowana całkiem niedawno technika translacji automatycznej oparta na przykładach wydaje się być poważną alternatywą dla innych, znanych już uprzednio metod. W artykule zaproponowano zmodyfikowaną wersję translacji automatycznej opartej na przykładach, przeznaczoną specjalnie dla języka polskiego. W artykule opisano zastosowanie zaproponowanej metody w eksperymentalnym systemie tłumaczącym z języka włoskiego na polski.
