This paper describes a new method of ultrasound study of the breast using a 3 D linear scanner with special three dimensionallinear mechanical probe. The purpose is to assess the feasibility of whole-breast 3D ultrasound to document the total volume of the breast and axillary region. Subsequent volumes are registered and labeled according to proposed procedure. A special application called SonoLab was developed for compounding and visualization of all volumes registered during the study. The partial volumes could be compounded manually or semi-automatically into a single volume, manipulated, analyzed and segmented as a single 3D structure of a whole breast. The application allows the physician to seleet interactively any cut pIane like during normal ultrasound study. This method gives the opportunity of more objective and repetitive study: full documentation of the breast exam that could be reviewed by another physician and/or compared with previous studies.
