Przeanalizowano wyniki międzynarodowych badań okrężnych organizowanych przez IIS (Institute for Interlaboratory Studies) z okresu ostatnich sześciu lat pod kątem precyzji metod oznaczania całkowitej liczby zasadowej (CLZ). Badania 25 próbek świeżych olejów silnikowych oraz 6 próbek olejów silnikowych z eksploatacji wykonano trzema znormalizowanymi metodykami badawczymi, różniącymi się składem użytego rozpuszczalnika. W zależności od zastosowanej metodyki badawczej zauważono różnice rozpuszczalności badanych próbek, co w rezultacie skutkuje uzależnieniem otrzymywanego wyniku, czyli liczby zasadowej, od zastosowanego rozpuszczalnika.

The results of international round robin tests organized by the IIS (Institute for Interlaboratory Studies) within the period of the past six years were analyzed in terms of precision for the determination of the Total Base Number (TBN). The tests were performed for the determination of the base number by three standardized research methods, differing in the solvent used, for 25 samples of fresh/unused motor oils, and 6 samples of used motor oils. Differences in the solubility of samples tested according to these methods were observed. The TBN value obtained results from the solvent used.

This paper presents results of an investigation focusing on the effect of high acidity fuel (high TAN) on the properties of lubricating oil. The capability of the upgraded lubricating oil (increased TBN) to withstand an operation of the engine when fuelled with animal fat was checked. Two lubricating oils were compared. A thermogravimetric method is proposed for characterisation of deposits formed in the lubricating oil centrifuge.

This paper is a continuation of the analysis of the grade of wear of the engine oil, used in the Caterpillar's marine engine, which is working in the engine's room of the harbour tug. Previous studies were related to the dynamic viscosity, lubricity and the grade of the metallic elements contamination. In these studies, the viscosity of the oil in most samples decreased with time of exploitation. However, in some samples, an increase of the viscosity was observed, what may indicate the fuel entering into the circulation of lubricating oil and its subsequent evaporation. Aim of this study is to determine the size of the Total Base Number changes and the flash point changes. The authors examine the changes in Total Base Number and the flash point of the exploited engine oil, in specified intervals in time between its exchanges. The results are analyzed and compared to the previously obtained results of the viscosity, lubricity and the grade of the metallic elements contamination. The analyses of the Total Base Number were conducted on the RST 822 Radiometer from Radiometer Analytical A/S, according to the polish standard PN-76/C-04163: Petroleum Products. Determination of the Total Base Number by potentiometric titration with perchloric acid. Flash point was determined using the Cleveland, in the open pot, using an ISL FP 92 5G device from Tusnovics Instruments Poland Ltd. The conclusions of this paper lead to better understanding of the processes, which occur in marine engines and its influence on the oil aging. Understanding of this process contributes significantly to a more accurate mathematical modelling of the aging process of engine oil.

As the time is passing, lubricating oil in marine engine lubricating oil system loses its quality because of oil deterioration process. Lubricating oil quality influences the wear of tribological system elements. The total base number (TBN) is one of the most important oil quality properties. During operation of diesel engines the TBN decreases as alkaline additives are exhausted mainly through neutralization offuel burning acid products. So as to improve lubricating oil properties an engineer uses some maintenance methods. One of these methods is refilling process. The paper presents theoretical researches of total base number changes modelling at various lubricating oil refilling methods. Theoretical model of oil-deterioration process was worked out on the basis ofmass balance equation of total base number. The method of sofaing the problem, structural model of experimental unit, total base number change in case of constant refilling process, calculating example, total base number changes in PIELSTICK12PC2-5V engine oil versus parameter d, percentage changes of total base number in PIELSTICK 12PC2-5V engine oil versus parameter d are presented in the paper.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań eksploatacyjnych olejów silnikowych stosowanych w systemie transportu, jakim są Zakłady Komunikacji Miejskiej. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań, określono wpływ wydłużenia resursu oleju silnikowego na jego podstawowe własności, świadczące o zdatności. Zauważono ścisły związek pomiędzy ilością dolewek oleju świeżego, a badanymi parametrami. Zwrócono także uwagę na pewne dodatnie korelacje pomiędzy zmianami wartości parametrów zachodzącymi w eksploatowanych olejach.

The paper presents the results of the operation and maintenance investigations carried out for the engine oils used within a transport system represented by the Zakłady Komunikacji Miejskiej (Municipal Transportation Works). Based on the studies performed, the ageing process nature of the engine oil and the impact of the operation and maintenance conditions on the momentary state of the major parameters describing the engine oil amplitude have been determined. The analysis of the significance of some of the oil condition parameters has been carried out, too. It has been proven that in the transport systems, as of today, there is lack of a comfortable and reliable diagnostic and control method to check the engine oil condition during the operation and maintenance process. On the basis of the actual indexes, this paper constitutes and introduction to an attempt to extend oil operation service life, including the determination of the states of some parameters.

W artykule przedstawiono metodę badawczą umożliwiającą ocenę stanu eksploatowanego oleju silnikowego w oparciu o przebieg natężenia prądu przepływającego przez olej (charakterystykę prądową) pod wpływem skokowej zmiany napięcia. Zaprezentowano wyniki pomiarów wskaźników elektrycznych oraz fizykochemicznych: liczby zasadowej i liczby kasowej oleju smarowego pochodzącego z eksploatacji w benzynowym silniku spalinowym. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy wyników badań z wykorzystaniem metod regresji liniowej stwierdzono przydatność metody do oceny stopnia zestarzenia oleju silnikowego w aspekcie liczb zasadowej i kwasowej.

The article presents a simple and effective diagnostic method for evaluation of engine lubricating oil condition with the use of dependence between oil proprieties and the changes of a transient current flowing through it in response to a step voltage application. Current characteristic, total acid number (TAN) and total base number (TBN) measurements of used lubricating oils were conducted during investigations. The used lubricating oils were obtained from passenger car. The measurement results have demonstrated that there is a strong correlation between electrical coefficients and neutralization numbers. Therefore, the method can be a potential means for evaluation of oil condition.
