Quantitative assessment of the scope of content of selected topographic maps of Polish lands from the 19th and the first half of the 20th century

The author presents an overview of the scope of content of selected topographic maps of Polish lands from the 19th and the first half of the 20th century in its quantitative aspect. 19 maps were analysed and a common conceptual model linked to the Database of Topographic Objects (DBTO10k) was developed on the basis of catalogues of object types. Quantitative statistics were also prepared for the object types from maps before and after harmonization. Differences between their numbers within the same maps reflect the conceptual variety of said maps. The number of types of objects (before and after harmonization) was then juxtaposed with selected thematic layers: water network, transport network, land cover, buildings, structures, and equipment, land use complexes, localities and other objects. Such factors as scales, publication dates and topographic services which created analysed maps were also taken into consideration. Additionally, the analysed maps demonstrate uneven levels of generalization. Inclusion of objects typical for large-scale cartography on topographic and general maps is one of the distinctive features.

Systemy informacji przestrzennej (SIP) są w ostatnich latach jednym z najszybciej rozwijających się obszarów aktywności badawczej i wdrożeniowej. Regulacje wprowadzone dyrektywą INSPIRE dają ogromne możliwości wielodziedzinowego zastosowania SIP. Służą one obecnie już nie tylko do digitalizacji i wizualizacji, ale coraz częściej są rozbudowanym narzędziem wsparcia w procesach decyzyjnych obejmujących szerokie spektrum zagadnień. Do tego typu systemów informacji przestrzennej należy OPI-TPP, który będzie docelowo zapewniał ciągłość i aktualność danych o terenach poprzemysłowych i zdegradowanych oraz poszczególnych elementach środowiska, stając się bogatym źródłem informacji regionalnej. Podstawowym źródłem danych dla systemu OPI-TPP będzie Baza Danych Obiektów Topograficznych (BDOT) – wysokiej jakości prezentacji kartograficznych (w szczególności map topograficznych). Zadaniem BDOT jest zasilanie aktualnymi, wysokiej jakości danymi topograficznymi budowanych przez administrację, samorządy i instytucje publiczne. System OPI-TPP, w postaci portalu dziedzinowego, zostanie docelowo zaimplementowany na regionalnym portalu ORSIP. Kluczowym elementem systemu jest jego powiązanie z innymi zasobami danych przestrzennych oraz źródeł informacji, tworzącymi zintegrowany regionalny węzeł informacji przestrzennej zgodny z wytycznymi syrektywy INSPIRE i przepisami implementacyjnymi.

In recent years, Spatial Information Systems (SIP) are one of rapidly growing areas of research and implementation activities. Regulations introduced by the INSPIRE Directive offer tremendous opportunities for SIP multidisciplinary application. They are used today not only for digitization and visualization of reality, but they are more and more frequently a complex tool supporting decision-making processes covering a broad spectrum of issues. The OPI-TPP system is a spatial information system, which will ultimately provide quality of data on post-industrial and degraded areas becoming a comprehensive source of regional information. The primary source of data for the system will be Topographic Objects Data Base (BDOT). Its task is to supply current, high-quality topographic data produced by public administration and institutions. The OPI-TPP system, in the form of thematic geoportal, will be ultimately implemented at the regional portal ORSIP. A key element of the system is its interconnectivity with other spatial data resources, and information sources that make up an integrated regional node of spatial information in accordance with the guidelines of the INSPIRE Directive and its implementing rules.
