The article contains the definitions of footwear with protective properties depending on the construction of toecaps in the context of the level of protection provided. The issues relating to the requirements and standard test methods of toecap measurement used in protective footwear were also discussed. The requirements for all types of toecaps (i.e., the internal length of the toecap, impact resistance and resistance to compression) and also special requirements for the metal toecaps (i.e., corrosion resistance) and non-metal (i.e., aging and the influence of external factors: acid, base, diesel) were described. There are also presented and compared the results of resistance to the impact of the toecaps made of metal and composite used in the protective footwear in the work environment.

Celem artykułu było przybliżenie podstawowych zagadnień dotyczących podnosków ochronnych stosowanych w obuwiu w środowisku pracy. Przedstawiono podział podnosków ze względu na stopień zapewnianej ochrony. Scharakteryzowane zostały rodzaje materiałów stosowanych w ich konstrukcji, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem podziału na materiały metalowe i kompozytowe. Omówiono także standardowe i niekonwencjonalne metody badania podnosków chroniących przed urazami mechanicznymi.

The objective of the paper was to outline the basic issues concerning toecaps used in protective foot-wear. Classification of the toecaps in the context of the level of protection provided was presented. Types of materials used in construction of the toecaps were characterized in particular the division into metal and composite structures. The standard and unconventional testing methods of toecaps protecting against mechanical impacts were also discussed.
