A highly stereoselective synthesis of _-linked (1_6)-gluco- di- and trisaccharides has been described. In this procedure two thioglucosides, (5-nitro-2-pyridyl) 1-thio-_- D-glucopyranoside and 6-O-tritylated ethyl 1-thioglucoside were applied as an acceptor and a donor respectively.

We have found that heteroaryl thioglycosides are useful substrates of _-glucosidase from almond and can act as a new class of donors in transglycosylation reaction.

A new class of "latent" glycosyl donors, 2-thioglycosyl pyridine N-oxides was synthesized from 1-thiosugar and 2-bromopyridine N-oxide in the reaction of aromatic nucleophilic substitution of halogen.
