This survey is a critical overview of main aspects and topics of today’s research and innovation, with specific focus on MMS, while looking at past developments and achievements through few significant examples. Thus, we can discover that most of the today’s ideas and concepts have already been explored and exploited in the past. Nevertheless, today we have the great challenge of technology that permits advanced technical results that were not possible in the past within the practical innovation that today more and more is expected from research results.

From the history of Conferences on the Machine and Mechanism Science

In the course of the past sixty years of the Polish Committee for the Theory of Machines and Mechanisms (PC TMM) 24 scientific and didactic conferences have been held. The subject matter of these conferences, generally organized every other year, comprised problems of the classification, analysis and synthesis of mechanisms, the dynamics of machine systems, investigations concerning self-excited vibrations, the stability of the systems, the control of machines and biomechanics. The numbers of submitted papers as well as the number of participants substantiate the need of organizing such conferences, their importance and the activity of the Polish Committee of TMM for the purpose of creating a platform for the presentation and discussion of new research methods in the domain of mechanisms, machines, biomechanics and mechatronics.

A specific problem of mechanism synthesis

A technique for path synthesis is employed to design a feeder for carrying products between two points. The feeder is assumed to be a one degree of freedom system of six links connected by means of revolute joints. The mathematical basis of the concept is presented. An exemplary solution is presented and discussed.

The end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries saw the emergence and intensive development of many disciplines in the technical sciences, and the laying of a groundwork for those disciplines in their current form. In Poland, a country deprived of independent statehood until 1918, this was additionally a period when native research centres and scientific schools came into being, and when Polish-language specialist literatures emerged as well. Many of the eminent personages whose activities contributed to those trends have already been described in biographical notes and articles. There are still, however, not enough studies dealing with the substance of their scientific and professional achievements. One of the personages in question was Wacław Moszyński, professor of the Warsaw Technical University, a pioneer of machine construction and mechanism theory, author of the first academic textbook in the field to be published in Poland. The current article discusses Moszyński’s contribution to the development of mechanism and machine theory. The first part of the article gives an outline of the history of the discipline until 1945,presents the context of the after-war activities of the author, and evaluates his influence on the development of machine and mechanism theory in Poland; it also carries a short biography of Moszyński. The rest of the article is devoted to Moszyhski’s scientific achievements, and describes his approach to matters of structure, kinematics and dynamics, with special focus on those of his fonnulations and solution to problems that appear particularly innovative and original. The article also points out those proposals by Moszyński which made him a precursor of other disciplines, such as vibroacoustics, biomechanics and ergonomics. The paper also presents the role of Moszyński’s work as a foundation for the development of the Warsaw research-and-teching centre in the field. The achievements and methods of the Warsaw school combined with the those of other centres in Poland, which based on the earlier Lwow tradition, thus leading to very significant research and educational accomplishments.

Teoria maszyn i mechanizmów jest dyscypliną uprawianą w Politechnice Lubelskiej od ponad 30 lat. Referat jest próbą podsumowania działalności dydaktycznej i naukowajej zespołu zajmującego sie tą dyscypliną. Na tle 50 letnich dziejów Politechniki Przedstawiono zaryz historii i jednostek, z którymi powiązany był zespół TMM, a także krótkie biogramy jego członkó. Omówiono formy, programy i wymiar zajęć dydaktycznych w tym okresie. Załączono obszerną bibliografię, dokonano przeglądu publikacji i krótko omówiono główne kierunki prac naukowych pracowników zespołu.

Machine and Mechanizm Theory is a field of knowledge which has been culivated for more than 30 years at the Lublin Universitet of Technology. In the paper there is an attempt to recapitulate the educational and research activity of a team engaged in this subject. The authors present an outline of halfcentury history of departments in which the MMT team has been incorporated. Moreover, the short biographic notes of the team members were inserted. The forms, programs and teahing load of lectures and classes during this period were described. The review of pubicaton was executed and principal lines of the staff scientific work were shortly characterised.
