This paper investigates the lateral performance of temporary structures, which consist of slender members and corresponding joints, under both vertical and horizontal loads. The ultimate bearing capacity, failure modes and the strain distribution of members are illustrated. Experimental results indicate that the lateral stability of the temporary structures is weaker than the vertical stability. Diagonal bracings are the main load-bearing members which resist horizontal loads while the horizontal bars are used to keep stress low. Based on the joint mechanical parameters and the probabilistic models of initial geometric imperfection, the stochastic finite element models (SFEMs) using the Monte Carlo method have been established. The models can consider the semi-rigid performances of joints and initial geometric imperfection. The numerical results demonstrate consistency with structural tests data. Moreover, the influences of structural layers and spans are analysed based on the SFEM. Multiple factors, including spans, layers and upper vertical loads, should be considered when the lateral capacity of temporary structures is calculated. A rapid prediction formula of the lateral stability of temporary structure has been obtained.

Początki współczesnych konstrukcji pomocniczych i tymczasowych sięgają wielu tysiącleci wstecz. Przez wieki konstrukcje te pełniły wiele różnych funkcji i ról kulturowych w różnych częściach świata. Rola rusztowań, choć zawsze była bardzo ważna, nadal nie jest dostatecznie doceniana wśród inżynierów i badaczy kultury. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest pokazanie, w oparciu o wybrane przykłady, że konstrukcje pomocnicze i tymczasowe były używane zarówno do tworzenia nowych struktur, jak również w celach destrukcji. Wykorzystywano je przy niektórych procedurach karnych czy też działaniach wojennych, stosowano je również podczas pogrzebów i składania ofiar. Służyły zatem zarówno żywym, jak i umarłym. Dzięki analizie zaskakujących zastosowań konstrukcji tymczasowych można przekonać się, że stanowią one mocno zróżnicowaną grupę obiektów. Jak pokazuje niniejszy artykuł, pozostałości tych konstrukcji są niedocenianymi świadkami historii, dokumentującymi praktyki budowlane na przestrzeni wieków ich istnienia. Mogą one być wspaniałym narzędziem do szacowania czasu i sposobu tworzenia budowli w przypadkach, w których inne metody zawodzą.

The origin of the present-day auxiliary and temporary structures goes back many millennia ago. Many different functions and cultural roles were accomplished by these structures in various areas of the world throughout the ages. The role of scaffolds although very important throughout the ages, is still not properly appreciated among engineers or the researchers of human culture. The purpose of this paper is to show, on selected examples, that auxiliary and temporary structures were used both as structural systems as well as for destructional purposes. They were helpful in specific penalty or military human activities, they were applied during funerals and sacrifices too. Thus, they served both: living and dead people. Putting together surprising applications of temporary structures shows, that they are a very diverse group of objects. This paper also shows, that their remains are an underestimated witness of history, documenting the building practice throughout the centuries of the existence of these structures. They can be used as an excellent tool of evaluation of time and way of buildings creation, when other methods may be disappointing.

Wskazano na projektowe i technologiczne uwarunkowania wpływające na wybór konkretnych rozwiązań. Przedstawiono informację o skomplikowaniu całej inwestycji. Wszelkie doświadczenia są oparte na uzyskanej optymalnej i bezpiecznej pracy konstrukcji wykonanych skutecznie w napiętym harmonogramie robót.

The paper describes examples of significant temporary structures made within the project of the tunnel under the Martwa Wisła river in Gdańsk. Design and technological conditions affecting the selection of specific solutions were indicated. Information about the complexity of the investment are presented. All experiences are based on obtained optimal and safe functionality of structures made effectively in a busy work schedule.

Budowle projektowane na wystawy światowe miały być miejscem prezentacji osiągnięć poszczególnych państw. Jedne budynki miały po wystawie pozostać, być trwałe, inne projektowane wyłącznie na czas wystawy były tymczasowe. Losy budynków potoczyły się w różny sposób. Obecnie okazało się, że wiele pawilonów tymczasowych wbrew wstępnym założeniom trwa nadal.

Temporary pavilions erected for international fairs were to demonstrate countries achievements. Some buildings were meant to stay and become permanent and some, the temporary ones, were to be taken down once the fairs ended. Often, the initial purpose has changed for various buildings. Later, there are many temporary structures which against their initial intentions are still being used on a permanent basis.

Zmiany te zostały przeanalizowane w artykule. Podano przykłady ustalania okresu powrotu w odniesieniu do różnych konstrukcji tymczasowych.

This modification has been analyzed in the paper. Examples of establishing periods of the return for different temporary structures were given.
