The aim of the article is to familiarise the reader with telecommunication problems and services that operator Telekomunikacja Polska S.A. (TP S.A.) renders for the international telecommunication network of the Military of National Defence. Selective figures that show the range and possibilities of TP S.A. have been presented. The article is based on data included in the Report of the TP S.A. Capital group of April 2001.

Przedstawiono zarys historii TP S.A., jej główne obszary działalności, posiadaną infrastrukturę telekomunikacyjną, rozwój rynku abonenckiego, ofertę usług telekomunikacyjnych i zakres współpracy z innymi operatorami. Scharakteryzowano posiadane wyposażenie informatyczne. Przedstawiono działalność naukowo-badawczą. Przedstawiono działalność inwestycyjną i orientacyjne wskaźniki finansowe.

The history of Polish Telecom, their main activity areas, owned telecommunications infrastructure, subscriber's market development, telecommunications services offer and cooperation with other operators is described. Used computer systems and equipment is characterised. Research and development is briefly presented. Some data concerning investing and finances are shown.

Omówiono przemiany, dokonujące się na rynku telekomunikacyjnym obecnie i przewidywane w przyszłości. zwrócono uwagę na konsekwencje historyczne rozwoju tego sektora, w szczególności na zagadnienie przechodzenia od monopolu państwowego do wolnego rynku usług telekomunikacyjnych oraz problem współistnienia wielu operatorów na tym rynku. Wskazano na niektóre zagadnienia związane z ekonomią w telekomunikacji i decyzję Unii Europejskiej dotyczącej pełnej liberalizacji sektora telekomunikacyjnego od roku 1998, co w Polsce musi być brane pod uwahę, w związku z dążeniem do zjednoczonej Europy.

The paper describes current and future changes on the market for telecommunications services. Historicalconsequences of sector development was brought into consideration, especially the issue of transformation from State owned monopoly to an open market and coexistence of several operators on this market. The authors indicated also most important problems conected with economy in telecommunications at the European Union decision on liberalisation of the sector, what is very important for Poland on te way to the United Europe.
