Improving the eco-efficiency of manufacturing processes with the use of Industry 4.0 technologies in the circular economy

Purpose: The aim of the article is to analyze the implementation of the Industry 4.0 technologies to improve eco-efficiency of manufacturing processes from the perspective of the development of innovative IT technologies in the circular economy. Design/methodology/approach: The research methods used in the article were desk research analysis of available source data on the functioning of Industry 4.0 technologies. Additionally, the author bases on the institutional and legal method. Analysis of selected documents and existing studies have allowed to obtain answers to the research questions and to describe the eco-efficiency of manufacturing processes. Findings: The Industry 4.0 technologies in the circular economy can contribute to improve the eco-efficiency of manufacturing processes. However, there are still some difficulties in creating the fully efficient processes in the circular economy. Research limitations/implications: The main limitation in carrying out the research is the difficult access to data about the quantity and quality of the eco-efficiency of manufacturing processes improving by the Industry 4.0 technologies. Practical implications: The results of analysis and the conclusions in this article can be used by managers of the different types of companies involved in the circular economy. The research impact upon the enterprise concentrating on the raising awareness of the benefits of using wide range of the Industry 4.0 technologies for improving the eco-efficiency of manufacturing processes. Originality/value: This article describes the benefits that can be obtained from the implementation of the Industry 4.0 technologies in the circular economy. The research issues related to development of the circular economy constitute a new area of research. The newly developed focus on improving eco-efficiency of the manufacturing processes by using the innovative IT technologies in the circular economy. The eco-efficiency of the manufacturing processes in the circular economy, examined from the point of view of the use of Industry 4.0 technologies, is an innovative research approach.

Do podobnych wzrostów przyzwyczailiśmy się także w e-handlu, którego udział w handlu ogółem zwiększa się coraz szybciej, a przewiduje się również szybszy wzrost w e-grocery. Współczesne rozwiązania w kolejnictwie, podobnie jak w innych dziedzinach, korzystają z rozwiązań technik informacyjnych (IT). Również w Instytucie Kolejnictwa prace rozwojowe i badania techniczne w coraz większym stopniu wymagają stosowania tych technologii i wykorzystują produkty z zakresu technik informacyjnych. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono przegląd wybranych rozwiązań, technik i metod badawczych wykorzystywanych w badaniach i pracach rozwojowych Instytutu Kolejnictwa. Modern railway solutions increasingly take advantage of information technology (IT). Research and development activities carried out by the Railway Research Institute use these technologies and are based on IT products. This article features an overview of selected solutions, techniques and research methods used in the research and development work carried out at the Railway Research Institute. The author presented his opinion on the scope of solutions applied at the Railway Research Institute, identified areas of good or sufficient support of research and development tasks, and areas where the current range of IT application is not sufficient due to changes in the Railway Research Institute’s interest arising from changes in the railway transport market in Poland and technological changes in the infrastructure and rolling stock.

The aim of the article is to present innovative IT solution for monitoring transport in the process of fuel distribution, which was implemented in Grupa Lotos in January 2013. Hardware and software requirements of the system as well as the functional and task-oriented structure were described in the article. In contrast with other standard applications supporting the management of liquid fuel supply chain it is a unique solution, which considerably contributes to a significant reduction of the levels of losses and extraordinarily increases the safety and quality of delivered goods. It is a tool which may become an important source of competitive edge during stagnation in the market of fuels.

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie innowacyjnych rozwiązań informatycznych do monitorowania transportu w procesie dystrybucji paliw płynnych, które zostały wdrożone przez GRUPĘ LOTOS w styczniu 2013. W artykule opisano wymagania sprzętowe i oprogramowanie oraz scharakteryzowano strukturę funkcjonalno- zadaniową systemu. W odróżnieniu od innych standardowych aplikacji wspomagających zarządzanie łańcuchem dostaw paliw płynnych jest to rozwiązanie unikatowe, które przyczynia się do znacznej redukcji poziomu ubytków oraz ponadprzeciętnego zwiększenia bezpieczeństwa i jakości dostarczanych produktów. W warunkach stagnacji na rynku paliw jest to narzędzie, które może stanowić istotne źródło przewagi konkurencyjnej.
