The trend in Europe and other countries goes definitely towards separate collection and compositing waste from households, gardens and parks. In several countries (the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Canada, Sweden) there are quality assurance systems for composted products. Many other countries have just started with compost standardization. Quality criteria for this fertilizer include the allowable levels of contaminations with heavy metals, other pollutants (plastic, glass, stones, organic contaminations) and hygienic standards. This paper presents heavy metals limits in EU law regulations and for comparison Polish regulations. In Poland there are 54 compositing plants with different technologies (from the simple windrow method to very complicated ones). The quality of polish compost varies and depends on the quality of raw materials. Composting mixed municipal waste is still popular despite the fact that the quality of this kind of "compost" is poor. Only composts from green and households waste comply with EU requirements. Polish law regulations are not satisfactory for EU requirements of compost quality and must be changed.
