The article comprises four complementary strands. One serves as an introduction and signals some of the key issues relating to the human aspects of present-day technical design with a focus on production systems. Part two describes key macroergonomic concepts, scientifically defines the term "human factor criteria" and discusses the nature of sociotechnical system design and the methodological legacy in the field. Part three centres on incentives that motivate people to develop socio-technical systems as well as some complex economic, social, technical, legal and cultural factors that more or less directly trigger action. This section also describes studies on entrepreneurial behaviour. The article ends with a debate that attempts to summarize its central points. In addition to methodological dilemmas and controversies, the author outlines opportunities and benefits offered by today's macroergonomics in support of modern humanistic technical design and a higher standard of living.
