The first underground line in Warsaw was bored with the use of technically not advanced Russian boring machines of SzCzN1s type. Geological structure of Warsaw is one of the most varied and complex, therefore the first underground line was commissioned in total after 25 years. When in 2006 the plans of constructing the second line were announced, the boring method with the use of TBM has already been available, and at the same time safer and more efficient than the one applied for the first line. The basic difference, when compared to SzCzN1s machines, is the lack of the employees’ contact with the rock mass, since in the TBM technology there is no face known from the typical underground mining. The TBM technology which is innovative in the Polish market allowed to finish safely boring of the more than 6-km-long central section of the second metro line in Warsaw within 17 months. Very promising results obtained during implementation of this investment suggest that this technology will continue to be developed and improved, and construction of subsequent metro lines in Poland may be considered not only as the investment lasting for long decades, but only a few years.
