Jest banalną prawdą, że o budynki należy dbać, a dotyczy to zwłaszcza obiektów zabytkowych, o wyjątkowej wartości i przeznaczonych do specjalnych celów. Tak właśnie jest z tarasami skierowanymi ku Wiśle w ogrodach Pałacu Prezydenckiego w Warszawie. Ostatni większy remont miał miejsce w 2003 roku. W roku 2019 przyszedł czas na następny. Można wymienić cały rejestr imperfekcji, jakie pojawiły się na ogrodowych tarasach: pękające i przesuwające się elementy balustrad stojących wzdłuż ogrodowych schodów i krawędzi tarasów oraz popękane i wykruszające się stopnie schodów, spękane płyty, którymi tarasy są wyłożone. Odnowienia wymagały wazy na kwiaty, fontanna, metalowe części wyposażenia tarasów i inne drobniejsze elementy. Braki obniżały wartość ogrodów jako całości, nie można było pozwolić, aby utrwalała się dysharmonia pomiędzy starannie utrzymywaną roślinnością a niszczejącą małą architekturą ogrodową. Przyczyny zachodzących niekorzystnych zmian to działanie czasu oraz większa niż gdzie indziej wilgotność, wynikająca ze spływu zimnego powietrza doliną Wisły w zagłębieniu podskarpowym. W tej sytuacji odsuwanie remontu na dalsze lata przyspieszałoby destrukcję aż do możliwości pojawiania się katastrof budowlanych. Remont rozpoczął się od przeprowadzenia odpowiedniego rozpoznania zakresu zniszczeń i ustalenia zakresu robót. Wybrano wykonawców prac, zachowując ustawowe wymogi procedur wyboru. Na potrzeby remontu zamówiono opracowanie konserwatorskie, wykonane z uwzględnieniem zaleceń Stołecznego Konserwatora Zabytków. Do najważniejszych decyzji należało postanowienie o utrzymaniu dotychczasowej kolorystyki dominującej na tarasach. W związku z tym, po stwierdzeniu, że pokrywające tarasy do tej pory płyty z piaskowca nie wytrzymują warunków, w jakich pracują i że lepiej by było, gdyby płyty były granitowe, znaleziono kamieniołom i dostawcę granitu w ciepłym kolorze piaskowym. Podsumowując, trzeba raz jeszcze podkreślić konieczność wykonania remontu tarasów ogrodowych Pałacu Prezydenckiego. Jest to interesujące zadanie konserwatorskie, dostarczające wielu doświadczeń teoretycznych i praktycznych.

It is a banal truth that buildings have to be taken care of, and it concerns in particular historic objects of unique value and intended for special purposes. And so it is with the terraces facing the Vistula River in the gardens of the Presidential Palace in Warsaw. The last large-scale renovation took place in 2003. In the year 2019 came the time for another one. One can make a long list of imperfections that appeared in the garden terraces: cracked and moving elements of balusters standing along the garden stairs and edges of terraces, broken and crumbling stairs, and cracked tiles the terraces were paved with. Flower vases, the fountain, metal parts of terrace furnishings and other smaller elements also required renovation. Damage lowered the value of the gardens as a whole, and the disharmony between the carefully maintained greenery and the deteriorating garden features could not be allowed to continue. The damage was caused by the passage of time and the humidity higher than elsewhere, resulting from the cold air flowing along the Vistula Valley below the escarpment. In this situation postponing the renovation would accelerate the destruction processes until a construction disaster occurred. The renovation began by carrying out a survey allowing for determining the extent of damage the scope of work required. The contractors were selected while abiding by the statutory requirements of the selection procedure. A conservation study which took into account the recommendations of the Capital City Monument Conservator was commissioned for the renovation. The most important decision concerned maintaining the previous colour scheme predominant on the terraces. Therefore, after finding out that the sandstone tiles previously used to cover the terraces did not survive the conditions in which they had to work, and had better be replaced with granite, a quarry and a supplier of granite in warm sandy colour were found. In conclusion, the necessity to carry out the renovation of the garden terraces in the Presidential Palace should once again be emphasised. It is an interesting conservation assignment that would provide both theoretical and practical experience.
