The effects of pretanning effluent obtained from leather processing on the germination and seedling growth of rice were investigated. Undiluted pretanning effluents, and its 1:10, 1:40 and 1:80 dilutions along with tap water were used for irrigation to germinate the seeds. Some morphological characteristics were investigated. No germination occurred in the seeds irrigated with the undiluted pretanning effluent. Elemental analyses of the shoots and roots of rice seedlings were conducted. The lowest contents of C (29.7%), S (0.41%), Cr (1.2 mg/kg) and Na (2933.8 mg/kg) in shoots were detected in control group. The lowest contents of Cu (38.81 mg/kg) and Mn (2225.0 mg/kg) in roots were determined in irrigations with 1:10 dilutions.

Wastewater from leather tanning, electroplating, organic dye production and non-ferrous metallurgy was treated in a batch anaerobic bioreactor of the total volume of 2.7 dm3 using Desulfovibrio desulfuricans for the removal of Crtotal, Cu(II), Fe(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) as metal sulfides. Except the tannery effluent, the wastewater samples were supplemented with an appropriate quantity of swine manure in order to enrich them with simple organic compounds and biogenic elements (N and P), and thus upgrade the sulfate reducing activity of D. desulfuricans. The metal removal efficiencies obtained varied from 85.2% to 98.96%.
W pracy dokonano analizy metodyki oczyszczania ścieków garbarskich pod kątem możliwości usuwania emulsji tłuszczowych i białek zwierzęcych w póltechnicznej instalacji membranowej. Testowano moduły mikro- i ultrafiltracyjne, przedstawiony został skład przebadanych ścieków garbarskich oraz wyniki wstępnych badań mikro- i ultrafiltracji.

Analysis of removal of oil emulsions and proteins from tannery effluents in a new pilot scale membrane unit was made. Microfiltration and ultrafiltration modules were tested. A composition of real tannery effluents and initial results of microfiltration and ultrafiltration experiments are also presented.
