Scalable PP-1 block cipher

A totally involutional, highly scalable PP-1 cipher is proposed, evaluated and discussed. Having very low memory requirements and using only simple and fast arithmetic operations, the cipher is aimed at platforms with limited resources, e.g., smartcards. At the core of the cipher's processing is a carefully designed S-box. The paper discusses in detail all aspects of PP-1 cipher design including S-box construction, permutation and round key scheduling. The quality of the PP-1 cipher is also evaluated with respect to linear cryptanalysis and other attacks. PP-1's concurrent error detection is also discussed. Some processing speed test results are given and compared with those of other ciphers.

W artykule opisano projekt i realizację układu szyfrowania danych na dysku twardym komunikującym się z urządzeniem z nim współpracującym poprzez interfejs IDE/ATA. Urządzenie to zbudowane w oparciu o programowalny układ FPGA jest transparentne dla systemu operacyjnego, co czyni go uniwersalnym oraz łatwym w zastosowaniu nawet przez niedoświadczonego użytkownika. Urządzenie zostało zaprojektowane do współpracy z dyskami wyposażonymi w złącze IDE/ATA lecz współpracuje poprawnie z dyskami standardu SATA podłączonymi przez odpowiednią przejściówkę.

The project and implementation of the hard disk data encryption circuit was described in the article. The circuit is intended for use with hard drives equipped with IDE/ATA interface. The circuit implemented in FPGA device is transparent for an operating system, so it is versatile and easy for use, even for inexperienced users. The device was designed for use with the IDE/ATA hard drives but it works properly also with SATA devices connected with an appropriate adapter.
