Ogrody hiszpańsko-arabskie oraz ogrody Antonio Gaudiego, reprezentują dwa style europejskiej sztuki ogrodowej. Obydwa powstały na Półwyspie Iberyjskim, gdzie od wieków spotykały się i przenikały kultury oraz cywilizacje basenu Morza Śródziemnego. Owo kulturalne dziedzictwo, niezwykły krajobraz ziemi hiszpańskiej oraz duchowość i mistycyzm miały decydujący wpływ na powstanie obydwu stylów.

The Spanish–Arabic gardens and Antonio Gaudi gardens represent two styles of European garden art. Both of them originated in the Iberian Peninsula where the civilisation and culture of the Mediterranean Sea interfaced and intermingled for centuries. This cultural heritage, extraordinary landscape of Spanish lands and spirituality as well as mysticism had a decisive influence on the formation of these two styles.

Ogród zwany La Tamarita, położony w barcelońskiej dzielnicy Sant Gervasi to jedna z pierwszych realizacji krajobrazowych Nicolau Rubio i Tuduri. W tym kameralnym ogrodzie otaczającym dawną rezydencję przemysłowca Alfredo Mata Julia, odnaleźć możemy wiele elementów charakterystycznych zarówno dla wcześniejszej jak i późniejszej twórczości tego znakomitego, katalońskiego architekta krajobrazu XX wieku. Ogród La Tamarita, dziś ogród publiczny i ogólnodostępny, zachował urzekający klimat dawnej, pod barcelońskiej rezydencji z początku XX wieku.

The garden called La Tamarita, located in the Barcelonian district Sant Gervasi is one of the first landscape creations of Nicolau Rubio i Tuduri. In this intimate garden surrounding a former residence of an industrialist Alfredo Mata Julia, we can find many elements characteristic both to the earlier and later works of this outstanding Catalan landscape architect of the 20th century. La Tamarita Garden, nowadays public and wide open, preserved the captivating atmosphere of the former Barcelonian residence of the early 20th century.

The art of garden design has always combined practical and symbolic aspects. The present article focuses on the relation between beauty and function with regard to water management. Four aspects are discussed, exemplified by historic gardens: - Rainwater - connection between Heaven and Earth - Ground water - mystery of depth - Flowing water - expression of movement - Stagnant water-magic of the mirror. The author focuses on how water, in its various aspects, permeates and connects all landscape elements. The relationship between architecture of buildings and topographic features on the one hand and water drainage or collection on the other is discussed in various climatic zones. The influence of ground water on plants and landscape architecture is analysed. Referring to the gardens at Versailles, Kassel and Peterhof, the author shows the complexity and ingenuity of some systems built to supply water. Finally, the aesthetic and symbolic role of the pond, as associated with the mirror, is discussed in European parks (Versailles) and Chinese gardens.
