Szkodliwe działanie azbestu na zdrowie ludzi zostało potwierdzone stosunkowo niedawno, bo w latach 80. ubiegłego wieku. Zaliczono go do substancji stwarzających szczególne zagrożenie dla środowiska i jako materiał niebezpieczny został zakazany w wielu państwach, w tym w całej Unii Europejskiej.

Naturally occurring hydrated fibrous silicates have general name – an asbestos. Owning to their desirable properties such as fire resistance, tensile strength, thermal, electrical and sound insulation, this mineral has found worldwide applications in industry. When the world consumption of asbestos has reached its peak (1970s, 1980s), the relationship between exposure to asbestos and lung diseases has been proved and in many countries has been introduced restrictions and bans of its use. Removing asbestos from immediate surroundings of humans is a difficult task, because the world production from 1900 until today has been estimated at circa 200 million tons of this raw material.
