The 55th World Exhibition of Innovation, Research and New Technologies BRUSSELS-EUREKA, 23-27 November 2006, which has been held in Heysel Expo is characterized there in this paper. That public exhibition gathered round more than 500 participants from more than 30 countries. Many researches and scientists dealing with the new technologies, individual inventors as well as innovating companies, associations of inventors and professionals in technology transfer have presented about 600 innovations and patented new inventions in a variety of areas. The Institute of Glass and Ceramics was granted with a gold medal "EUREKA 2006" for the invention "Crystal glass with a various degree of the lead oxide substitution and lead-free crystal glass", which had been drawn up in the Institute of Glass and Ceramics - Cracow Branch.

W artykule przedstawiono podział i wymagania dla szkieł kryształowych według przepisów unijnych. Omówiono wpływ czystości surowców, stosowanych do wytopu szkieł kryształowych, w tym zwłaszcza piasku szklarskiego, na właściwości użytkowe takie jak bezbarwność i przepuszczalność światła.

In this paper, there have been presented the classification and detailed requirements for chemical and physical properties concerning to crystal glass, in the aspect of the European Union and new Polish law regulations. The influence of purity of the raw materials, especially glassmaking sand used for melting crystal glass, on some useful properties such as colourless and light transmittance have also been reported.

Some adaptation problems for the Polish glass industry in connection with approximation to the European Union legal provisions and regulations have been presented there, in this paper. The substantial change of requirements is relating to aquis in an environment protection and free movement of goods area. The requirements connected with harmonization of the Polish law regulation in that area, covering crystal glass products, and especially - rules of a special description and labelling for crystal glass products - characteristics for the various categories of crystal glass with regard to protection of buyers and manufacturers wirhin the Community against fraud - obligatory methods for determining of the chemical and physical properties of crystal glass, have been described there in this paper. The new tasks for operators of installations for glass manufacturing due to the requirement of an integrated approach to reduce pollution level at Community and implementation of the system of the integrated prevention and control of pollutions from industrial plants, have also been discussed, together with problems connected with continuous worldwide trend to decrease permissible limits of lead compounds emission and release of lead in contact with food.
