Building student groups of similar usability needs in web based learning systems

The performance of Web-based learning systems depends on student acceptance of the environment. Usability needs may differ among students attending the same course who have similar technical skills, and it is difficult to determine average user requirements. The identification of student groups of similar preferences may help designers in building interfaces acceptable for users. Methods for building student groups investigated in the paper were chosen according to different factors, which are connected with usability requirements. We examine such portal features like graphics, navigation, the informative contents architecture of web sites as well as color preferences. An application of data mining methods for creating groups has been considered. Some experiments for real student data are presented.

Efektywność systemów nauczania na odległość zależy od akceptacji środowiska przez studentów. Potrzeby studentów w tym zakresie mogą się różnić, nawet wśród studentów z tego samego kursu o tych samych umiejętnościach, i trudno jest określić przeciętne wymagania użytkownika. Identyfikacja grup studenckich o podobnych preferencjach może pomóc projektantom w budowaniu akceptowalnych dla użytkownika interfejsów. W pracy badane są różne czynniki, związane z wymaganiami użyteczności. Rozpatrywane są: zawartość informacyjna, nawigacja, grafika portalu oraz preferencje kolorystyczne. Zbadana została możliwość zastosowania metod eksploracji danych do tworzenia grup. Zaprezentowane zostały eksperymenty na rzeczywistych danych studentów.

Proces kształcenia specjalistów w konkretnej dziedzinie, na przykład w obsłudze zaawansowanych technologii sieciowych, jest procesem długim i żmudnym. Oprócz dobrze przygotowanej kadry dydaktycznej i zaplecza sprzętowego potrzebny jest program sprawdzenia poziomu i efektów nauczania. Jest to szczególnie ważne w procesie nauki na odległość, gdzie nie ma bezpośredniego kontaktu nauczyciela z osobą nauczaną. Nie zawsze prosty test wyboru jest gotową receptą na egzamin, a bardzo często jest nudnym zbiorem powtarzających się u wszystkich kursantów pytań. Artykuł przedstawia wyniki analiz sposobów organizowania metod egzekwowania wiedzy w nauczaniu na odległość.

A process of educating experts in a particular area, e.g. in handling advanced net technologies, is long and tedious. Apart from well-prepared teaching staff and equipment, a program of evaluating a level and effects of teaching is required. It is extremely important in the process of e-learning, where there is no direct contact between the teacher and the learner. Not always is the multiple-choice a ready recipe for an exam, more often it is a mundane set of questions, which are the same for all course attendants. This article shows the ways of testing knowledge in e-learning and the results of their analyses.
