New public space in Berlin's green structure – Park am Gleisdreieck

Berlin is an example of a city in which the principle of sustainable development has been consistently carried out for many years. The result of implementation of this principle is, among others, the rebuilding of the city's central parts and creating public spaces of a high standard. In the following article I present the newest example of a implementation of urban open space in the city-Park am Gleisdreieck. The park was created on the grounds of revitalized post-rail areas which lie on the border of two districts of Berlin: Kreuzberg and Schöneberg. It occupies an exceptional place in the system of the city’s public spaces. This is because it constitutes a green continuation of the central areas of Berlin – it is an extension of Tilla Durieux Park in the Potsdamer Platz complex and at the same time it is a part of one of city’s two main green axes. The park is distinctive because of the high quality of applied spatial solutions and extraordinary care to retain the elements that constitute the place’s identity. It is also an example of effective cooperation of designers, city governors and inhabitants.

Berlin jest przykładem miasta, w którym od wielu lat konsekwentnie realizowana jest polityka zrównoważonego rozwoju. Efektem realizacji tej polityki jest m.in. przebudowa obszarów śródmiejskich miasta i tworzenie wysokiej jakości przestrzeni publicznych. W artykule zaprezentowano najnowszy przykład zrealizowanej zielonej przestrzeni publicznej miasta – „Park am Gleisdreieck”. Park powstał na zrewitalizowanych terenach pokolejowych, leżących na granicy dwóch dzielnic Berlina: Kreuzberg i Schöneberg. Zajmuje on szczególne miejsce w systemie przestrzeni publicznych miasta. Stanowi on bowiem zieloną kontynuację śródmiejskiej przestrzeni Berlina, będąc przedłużeniem przestrzeni Tilla Durieux Park w zespole Potsdamer Platz i równocześnie jest on fragmentem jednej z dwóch głównych zielonych osi miasta. Park wyróżnia się wysoką jakością zastosowanych rozwiązań przestrzennych i szczególną dbałością o zachowanie elementów istotnych dla tożsamości miejsca. Jest także przykładem efektywnej współpracy projektantów, przedstawicieli władz i mieszkańców.

W artykule zaprezentowano uzasadniony historycznie, sprawdzony, ale ciągle najlepszy sposób kształtowania ciągłego, spójnego systemu terenów zieleni w mieście, najlepiej zaspokajającego potrzeby mieszkańców. Olmstedowskie parkways, które zapoczątkowały tworzenie zielonych dróg (greenways) to do dzisiaj jedna z modelowych form, m.in. tak obecnie modnych parków linearnych. Mogą one funkcjonować w każdym rodzaju przestrzeni, polepszają jakość krajobrazu miejskiego, łączą elementy systemu zieleni, sprzyjają rozwojowi miasta, tworzą korytarze ekologiczne, wykorzystują np. tereny opuszczone, są przedmiotem eksperymentów projektowych. Zaprezentowano też znaczenie obiektów historycznych i historią inspirowanych, wypełniających wiele nowoczesnych funkcji, m.in. kształtowujących miejsca tożsamości, do których bez wątpienia należą ogrody i parki.

The article presents historically justified and proven yet still the best method of shaping a consistent, unified system of green space in urban areas, that best fulfills the needs of their residents. Olmsted’s ‘parkways’, which initiated a creation of ‘greenways’, are still one of the model forms of the popular today linear parks. They can function in every type of space, they improve the quality of urban landscape, combine different elements of green systems, assist the urban development, create eco-corridors, utilize urban waste areas and are a subject of experimental design projects. The article also highlights the importance of historic and historically inspired objects that are utilised to fulfill many modern functions, for example to shape the identity of place; parks and gardens definitely belong to this category.
