One of the important engineering materials is compacted graphite iron (CGI). Obtaining an expected microstructure leading to desired material properties is relatively difficult. In this paper, we present an approach to predicting the microstructure with a fuzzy knowledge-based system. On the basis of the results of statistical analysis and expert knowledge, an original taxonomy of CGI casts was formulated. The procedure of data acquisition, specimen preparation, analysis procedure and microstructures obtained are presented. Methods for expert experience-supported knowledge extraction from experimental data, as well as methods for formalizing knowledge as fuzzy rules, are introduced. The proposed rulesets, the reasoning process, and exemplary results are provided. The verification results showed that, using our approach, it is possible to effectively predict the microstructure and properties of CGI casts even in the absence of sufficient data to use data-driven knowledge acquisition. On the basis of the results obtained, examples of possible applications of the developed approach are presented.

This paper introduces an approach to outlier mining in the context of a real-world dataset containing information about the mobile transceivers operation. The goal of the paper is to analyze the influence of using different similarity measures and multiple values of input parameters for the densitybased clustering algorithm on the number of outliers discovered during the mining process. The results of the experiments are presented in section 4 in order to discuss the significance of the analyzed parameters.

This paper introduces an approach to outlier mining in the context of rule-based knowledge bases. Rules in knowledge bases are a very specific type of data representation and it is necessary to analyze them carefully, especially when they differ from each other. The goal of the paper is to analyze the influence of using different similarity measures and clustering methods on the number of outliers discovered during the mining process. The results of the experiments are presented in Section 6 in order to discuss the significance of the analyzed parameters.

The paper deals with an inference system with probabilistic-fuzzy knowledge base as a tool which can help users in analyzing complete uncertainty of real problems in the company using fuzzy sets and probability. In the mentioned system, knowledge is saved in the weighted IFTHEN fuzzy rules, where the weights constitute marginal probabilities of the fuzzy events in the antecedents and conditional probabilities of the fuzzy events in the consequents. Moreover, the paper presents a proposal of the use of fuzzy association rules as a method of automatic knowledge base extraction in the inference system. For this purpose a modification of the PF-Growth algorithm is described. A numerical example is analyzed by using wind speed prediction process. The correct estimation of wind speed, as the potential energy resource, is necessary for control of the wind turbine work and it is important for the localization process of wind turbines, production planning and estimating cost-effectiveness of such investments.

Potential and present investors in the South African (S.A.) wool industry need up-to-date information on the production and properties of the wool they need for the particular end-products they manufacture or intend to manufacture. This article describes the concept and development of a knowledge-based advisory system on the utilisation of South African wool for the benefit of present and potential investors and other interested parties. The architecture of the system encompasses the concept of distributed systems and the related advantages in its general architecture and within its internal components. It marries both expert and general knowledge-based systems.

Purpose: of this paper: During the recent 10-15 years, Computer Aided Process Planning and Die Design evolved as one of the most important engineering tools in sheet metal forming, particularly in the automotive industry. This emerging role is strongly emphasized by the rapid development of Finite Element Modelling, as well. The purpose of this paper is to give a general overview about the recent achievements in this very important field of sheet metal forming and to introduce some special results in this development activity. Design/methodology/approach: Concerning the CAE activities in sheet metal forming, there are two main approaches: one of them may be regarded as knowledge based process planning, whilst the other as simulation based process planning. The author attempts to integrate these two separate developments in knowledge and simulation based approach by linking commercial CAD and FEM systems. Findings: Applying the above approach a more powerful and efficient process planning and die design solution can be achieved radically reducing the time and cost of product development cycle and improving product quality. Research limitations/implications: Due to the different modelling approaches in CAD and FEM systems, the biggest challenge is to enhance the robustness of data exchange capabilities between various systems to provide an even more streamlined information flow. Practical implications: The proposed integrated solutions have great practical importance to improve the global competitiveness of sheet metal forming in the very important segment of industry. Originality/value: The concept described in this paper may have specific value both for process planning and die design engineers.

Content available remote A knowledge-based system for selection of progressive die components
EN
Purpose: The present paper describes a knowledge-based system (KBS) developed for selection of progressive die components to automate the design process of progressive dies in stamping industries. Design/methodology/approach: The production rule based KBS approach of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been utilized for constructing the proposed system. The system has been structured into seven KBS modules. Modules are user interactive and designed to be loaded in to the prompt area of AutoCAD. Findings: The output of system modules includes the type and proper dimensions of progressive die components namely die block, die gauges (front spacer and back gauge), stripper, punches, punch plate, back plate, die-set and fasteners. The system has been designed in such a way that the expert advices imparted by its modules are automatically stored in different output data files. These data files can be further utilized for automatic modeling of die components and die assembly. Research limitations/implications: Altough the system is limited to the design of progressive dies only, yet it can be extended further for the design of other types of dies also. Practical implications: The proposed system is ready for use in sheet metal industries for quick selection of progressive die components. The system can be implemented on a PC having AutoCAD software and therefore its low cost of implementation makes it affordable by small and medium sized stamping industries. Originality/value: The proposed system is capable of accomplishing the time-consuming task of selection of progressive die components in a very short time period.

Purpose: Purpose of this paper is present a detailed framework to integrate the Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Inspection (CAI) systems through the integration of the Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) with the inspection process in coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). Design/methodology/approach: The approach used to develop a prototype of a Knowledge Based System (KBS) applied to inspection process establishes a new methodology for integrate the geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). The integration is achieved through the definition of the knowledge units for functional properties of GD&T, inspection resources and inspection operations in a common knowledge model. The manufacturing and processing applications are the main topics approach of this paper. Findings: The findings are focused in modeling the features and interactions between knowledge units associated to topology, geometry and tolerances with the inspection process activities. The implementation of the product knowledge model is presented in a computer platform that extracts and represents the GD&T information in a CAI system. Research limitations/implications: The implications are focused on the automation of the inspection process in a KBS application. The future research is focused on the use of artificial intelligent technique, such as genetic algorithms and neural networks, to optimize the time to execute the inspection process. Practical implications: The main outcomes and implication of the KBS prototype application are focused on the reduction of the time spend to develop the inspection process. This KBS application provides the needed information to elaborate this process without the human interface. Originality/value: The original value of this paper is the integration of the design and inspection specification in a unique prototype application. The knowledge model has been defined in a common modeling language (UML) and can be implemented in different informatics platforms.
